Original review from 2011:
We bought this seat to replace a Britax Marathon, that we were moving my infant daughter up to. When we bought the Marathon I had thought to keep my son (1.5 at the time, now 4) in it until he was at the seat limits. He was very happy and comfortable in the Marathon, but now that he's older I was really wishing for cupholders and since my daughter had outgrown her infant carrier it seemed a good time to explore options for my son. I am REALLY glad I did. After doing some research, I found that, like others, the two frontrunners for a new seat were this one (Nautilus) and the Britax Frontier. We went to the store and tried them both out with my son and found that things were pretty much equal between the two for fit, looks, cupholder, and how the product will grow with the child (adjustments, etc). We chose the Nautilus mostly for the lower price and because I had read so many reviews about how difficult the Frontier could be to install. In fact, we bought 2 - one for each car. My son thinks we made an excellent choice - and when my husband installed it, he agreed. It took just a few minutes to install, nice and secure. (The old Marathon, on the other hand, took foooreevver to get it switched to rear-facing for my daughter.) My son likes the cupholder and the little cubbies in the armrest for his sunglasses/toys - he feels like a bigger kid. The straps are easy to adjust and latch. We have no issues with the crotch strap - I paid close attention to that based on other reviews. It is on the largest adjustment, but he's not uncomfortable and I feel like it will be just fine until he's ready for the seatbelt instead of the harness. I guess only time will tell for sure though. My son even slept well in it during the drive back from his grandparent's house, so clearly he's comfortable enough in it. The only "drawback" to the seat was that it is lower than the Marathon, so the first time we went driving my son complained he couldn't see, but once figured out how to move his head to a new position he was fine with it. My only wish is that the cupholder could be moved to the other side, or that there were two. All together, we are very pleased with the seat and would recommend it to anyone!
(I feel like I mention the cupholder alot - it's not that big a deal, it's just that I never realized how useful it would be for him AND me. Now, he's not trying to hand me a cup while I'm driving, or trying to figure out where to put a toy that he's tired of holding.)
1. Easy to install, and once you get it secure in there that thing isn't going ANYWHERE, it fits very tight to the seat and feels vey safe.
2. I like the angle that it sits at, I feel like my daughter is at a slight incline so it's nice for her to nap in and sit in for a long time.
3. I love the sippy cup holder, and so does she!
4. I love the straps, they are very secure and easy to adjust. I agree at times they are hard to unlock, but it's just a matter of knowing how to work it, which you figure out after a little while. People also say that the crotch area is too small, and it's too tight for their kids. My daughter is average size (been the 50 percentile her whole life) and I feel like she has tons of room in the crotch area, and she's never complained that it's too tight (which she has with the Britax!)
5. I'm very glad to know it's the last car seat I'll need to buy for my daughter, because I'll be able to turn it into a booster chair and a backless booster as well.
Finally, I had to return the second one I bought because a friend loaned us her old one. I was happy to find out you have up to a year to return it on amazon (which is not always the case). I really appreciate the lenient return time because we had it sitting in our garage for a couple months. We returned it and got a FULL REFUND. Some products you return on amazon charge you some money to return if it's not defective. I commented that there was no problem, it was just no longer needed, and I wasn't penalized for it. Amazing customer service, very appreciated.
I wish I could give this 6 stars!
The seat arrived within a week, and was very easy to install. The harness also has a "no-pinch" safety feature: a soft pad of material that lays between the harness/belt latch and your child, so that you never have to worry about accidentally pinching any tender skin when locking the latch. There are also two compartments built in on each inner side of the arm supports, where our son likes to put little toys or snacks (!).
The only negative thing about the Nautilus, and this is extremely minor, is that the cup-holder is a little bit too far for our son to reach comfortably right now. I'm sure he'll grow into it in time, but I wish it was adjustable and could be moved closer or further from the child as they need it.
Overall, we absolutely loved the Nautilus 3-in-1 car seat, and it was an excellent car seat for the price. I only wish we would've saved our money a year ago and bought this first, instead of the Evenflo Titan!
