High-Performance Steel

A budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics.

Attractive BladeFinish

Kershaw’s Bead-Blasted finish enhances a knife’s aesthetics and complements its end-use. The high-tech finish is achieved by applying a mixture of fine media onto the blade’s steel under high pressure, creating a smooth, non-reflective matte surface. Fine media includes glass and aluminum oxide beads that allow color variation and optimal performance results for an overall stunning effect.

Fast Deployment

Using a torsion bar to move the blade out of the handle, Kershaw’s revolutionary SpeedSafe Assisted Opening system enables smooth, secure, fast one-handed blade deployment. Apply manual pressure to the flipper or thumb stud with a light push or pull back to overcome resistance of the torsion bar, and the blade opens smoothly and locks into place for confident handling without premature closure.

Secure Locking System

With two steel plates, or liners, on the inside of each handle scale, the liner locking system safely secures the blade open and prevents unwanted blade closure. The lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent closure, and angles or is bent towards the blade tang creating a bias locked position. Apply manual force to move the lockbar to the side and fold the blade back into the handle.

One-Handed Flipper

Knives with SpeedSafe open have two options for one-handed blade deployment. To activate the smooth, instant open, user can push a thumbstud or press a flipper. The flipper on SpeedSafe assisted knives is easy to operate by both left- and right-handed users. And, once blade swings open and locks into place, flipper either disappears for aesthetics or remains visible for added finger protection.

Durable Handle

Very tough, able to take heavy-duty hard use, and versatile, glass-filled nylon handle material is a nylon synthetic polymer reinforced with glass threads for increased strength. Glass-filled nylon has incredible stiffness for a secure and stable grip, great ability to withstand heat, and dimensional stability combined with excellent wear resistance.

Convenient Pocketclip

Kershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. The reversible pocketclip allows user to choose to carry knife tip-up or tip-down or to choose on which side knife carries. The user may select either a preferred tip position or a preferred carry side.

For less than $25, somewhat comparable to Emerson CQC-7?

For less than $25, somewhat comparable to Emerson CQC-7?
See my pictures of the Clash next to an Emerson CQC-7 (made in Emerson's USA "small factory" vs. Ernie Emerson's customs). Both around 4 ounces, very similar blade lengths. Obviously a huge difference in pricing. The Clash has a useful finger grip cut-out; the Emerson has a longer, grippier handle. If you have an Emerson for edc, you might want a Clash for actual chores, to keep the wear off the Emerson. If you get attacked by a small, angry unarmed Middle Earth dwarf, you should be safe with either. Should be, but given the testy nature of Middle Earth dwarfs, no guarantees. The Clash has tip up or tip down carry holes, BUT only on the palm side (right hand grip) of the handle.Metal liners on both sides of the handle on the Clash (as on the CQC-7).Unlike the extremely grippy G10 on the Emerson, the Clash uses smooth (not aggressively diamond-patterned) plastic handles; the mostly-cosmetic ridges on the Clash don't really improve the grip of its smooth, non-gritty plastic. The assisted-opener on the Clash, which has typical Kershaw speed, is such a parlor trick the average guy could spend hours just playing with it while watching TV. In case you haven't tried one, after a medium amount of pressure on the rear flipper (present on this model) or on a thumb stud (not present on this model), once you are past the detent the blade flies open like the dickens. Snazzy! The Clash uses fasteners rather than rivets or glue to hold the assembly together. My Torqx set worked fine on them.Cosmetically the Clash is perfectly finished and assembled. The flipper is a little "pointy" on the finger but that's the nature of a lower-profile flipper. At 4 ounces the knife feels heavy out of the box, but in fact it's no heavier than the Emerson which I carry daily. You can't "shake" this knife open. For extra safety with any pocket knife (other than one which locks CLOSED as well as open, which is quite rare), cut off a small section of bicycle innertube to sheathe the knife in your pocket. It will fall free as you pull the knife out. If you don't use a sheathe, but sure to clip the blade side next to a pocket seam, not with the blade away from the seam. The knife won't accidentally open, but if you fall or the knife gets hit, it's better to orient the blade so the seam stops the opening. This steel has good write-ups. Kershaw, owned by the Japanese Kai knife company, seems to have transitioned to quality mainland-China manufacturing without a glitch. No quality concerns despite the crazy low price!***** Update, second one mid-2021My second one measures slightly under 3.0". This time around I paid $33. Steel is 8Cr despite Amazon misidentifying it as 3Cr - it's marked right on the blade. I prefer this more expensive Clash to the much cheaper, but similar sized footprint, Swerve - I don't like thumbstuds on assisted opening knives, it is too easy to snag a thumbstude on clothing by mistake. IMHO, the tiny flipper tab on on this Clash is much less likely to be snagged and catch. Please note the clip will move from one end of the knife to the other, but not to the other side. The stock position matches my preferred rear right pocket, right seam; or left shirt pocket, left seam, clipping locations. The stock position is also in my preferred tip down location, which I feel is safer in the event the blade slightly displaces out of the handle (it won't point up and stab your finger). On the other hand I suppose the direction of movement when removing from pocket with tip down, could conceivably result in pressure on the mini-flipper tab, so you gain some but lose some.

What can I say. May not be the super high quality steel used in USA versions, but the 8Cr13MOV steel used in Kershaws China versions is great stuff, especially for the money. This knife and the serrated version which I will copy and paste this review to are simply awesome knives for $19. In fact, they would be great for 2 or 3 times the price.

I have a very large collection of all makes and of course some are made in USA, some in China, Some in Germany, Some in Japan and etc, and naturally each is different as far as construction, materials, types of steel and etc.....

Many explore my collection and ask questions. EVERYBODY is stunned when you show them a super expensive 'high quality' knife and a super cheap China Knife (assuming they are legit makers, which kershaw is and not the cheapo china JUNK you find at flea markets that cost a dollar but are sold for $5-$20......Why do people buy obvious JUNK not even worth $1 at flee markets, ebay & etc when they can get a HIGH QUALITY blade such as this for the same $'s??) and after playing with them and hearing the prices for each, people are stunned at how great the quality is on the cheaper china versions and most everybody says they'd take the cheaper china versions over their more expensive counterparts. Now, let me make this clear. Nobody is knocking the more expensive blades. They love them, as do I...But for the money, its hard to beat this quality for such a low price.

The clash is another fine example. Only $19 but it screams 'high quality'. Razor sharp and I mean Razor sharp. No blade play at all. Opens easily and with a very authoritative snap. I test all knives and the clash with its 8Cr13MOV steel blade passed all tests with flying colors (including the serrated version) and came away as sharp as it was out of the box. When it does need sharpening, the 8Cr13MOV steel is a BREEZE to sharpen quick and easy but for those who dont want to, send it to kershaw and they'll sharpen it for free and pay to ship it back. As with all Kershaws, they have a great lifetime warranty. The same great warranty on a $19 blade as a $300 blade.

The clash is a nice sized knife. Not too big, not too small.

The only thing I dont like which are common on Kershaws (china or USA versions) is many have 'stiff' pocket clips. But it aint no big deal. A small bit of 'prying' it for 2 or 3 seconds and pocket clip is no longer stiff and easily slides in and out with little effort and no chance of you losing it due to it being too loose.

This and every china blade i've gotten from kershaw have been great. Very high quality at an unbeatable price. $19 is a steal for a knife of this quality...Many like them better then $100+++ knives I have. I LOVE my USA blades...but I also love my china blades, especially the quality versus price factor.

One last thing I'd like to mention since so many bring this topic up and most wonder why knives come in a tip down carry (they can easily be reversed for tip up). The reason is simple. The makers assume and recommend the knife be carried inside your pocket, not on the outside or on your belt. With that in mind, Tip DOWN is best for fastest and easiest deployment. I carry mine inside and it is perfect tip down. If it was tip up, I would have to take knife out, flip it and then deploy. Now, if I were to carry on outside or on my belt as many like to do, then the opposite is true. Tip UP would be best for fast deployment while tip down would require flipping the knife and then deploy. So, I do realize more people prefer tip up carry then tip down, and they obviously carry knife on belt or outside of pocket. I never carry my knives on my belt or outside of pocket so tip down is perfect and again, since the makers rec you carry inside thats why they come tip down from the factory. But, I dont see why so many gripe about that. If you carry on your belt, take the 3-5 minutes to change it to tip up carry and enjoy wearing on your belt for all to see, but please understand the makers do rec you carry inside so naturally they will come from factory in a tip down carry. The few times I do want a knife on my belt, I take 3 minutes and change it to tip up. No big deal. Quick and easy to do and when done, I put it back to tip down since 95% of the time I do carry blades inside, not outside or on my belt, but again, people shouldnt gripe about this....3 minutes and you can have it your way...tip up or tip down, whichever you prefer, and if you want to switch it for a particular reason, it takes 3 minutes to change and you can always switch it back when done.

Anyway, The clash is yet another SUPER KNIFE FOR THE MONEY...Dont buy just 1....buy 10 and give them as gifts....folks will love you and love the knife....and no, I dont work for Kershaw...Im just an avid collector and love Kershaws, both their USA and China versions and yes, I LOVE many others as well as Kershaw...Im dont only buy and collect kershaws...I buy and collect all makes and models assuming they are quality manufacterers (sp?), not just kershaw......Yes, I love Kershaws and have yet to get a bad one, but I have plenty of non kershaws I love as well.

Lastly, folks, I dont care if its a $15 blade or a $300 blade, you still must take care of them to avoid rust and other 'tarnishes' from the blade. Keep the blade oiled and your blade will be just fine whether its high end steel or not. The 8Cr13MOV steel is not going to rust if you slap some oil on it every blue moon......

Kershaw has hit a home run with this knife. The blade has great steel with more than adequate edge retention. When the knife needs a little touch up, this steel will be easy to sharpen without using expensive stones or sharpening systems. The handle is grippy without being overly rough to the point of tearing up your pockets or skin. Quick deployment- you bet ! One handed- no sweat! Solid lockup- no problem. Pocket clip- holds well. You don't have to worry about this one slipping away unnoticed. This is a great all around knife you can use and not whimper if you rough it up a bit. The knife costs under $25 as of Sept 2013 so you get a great knife for a low cost. What more could you ask for except two just like it.

If I were to give it a knock, I would say, for me the handle is a bit short and my pinky kind of slides past the end of the grip. I have large hands but by no means bear paw sized. On the other hand,(lol) it doesn't seem to be a problem when I use the knife. Those of you who want to hang a lanyard on the this one---well... there is no hole for that purpose.
If I were to bend, break, lose, or somehow totally mess this one up-- NO big tears running down my cheeks because I would definitely purchase another one. You get a great knife for the price that can hold its own with the higher priced big boys. It may not have the fit and finish of expensive and sometimes overpriced deluxe models but it will do want you expect a knife to do. It can cut cord, rope, make feather sticks, glide through cardboard, slice and dice, stop on a dime and give nine cents change. Dollars for value- this knife is a can't lose purchase. Why are you reading this instead of buying one? Go on, order one already. You'll be glad you did.

I have a bunch of Kershaw knives; not because most of them are inexpensive, but because they're GREAT knives and offer a HUGE bang-for-your-buck incentive to purchase one. The 1605 Clash is no exception.

I have knives from Proelia, SOG, CRKT, Coleman, Buck (to name but a few) and a few custom knives, but when it comes to true bargains, Kershaw knives are among the best. The blade in my 'Clash' is perfectly centered between the two halves of the grip and there is ZERO play in the blade when it's deployed. Due to the spring-loaded nature of the 'SpeedSafe' feature you'll find on a lot of Kershaw knives, the blade opens VERY quickly and locks into place with that snapping sound that every knife collector loves. It sounds like ... VICTORY!

I really like the shape of the grip on the 'Clash'. It fits nicely in your hand and provides a confidence inspiring and very snug grip when you wrap your fist around it. This knife could easily become my EDC (Every Day Carry) knife of choice, if it weren't for all the other knives I have in my collection. Actually, my favorite EDC knife is my Kershaw 1660 Ken Onion knife, which to me is an absolute work of art and is as close to perfection as any knife I've ever laid my hands on. Get one and you'll know what I mean.

The Kershaw 'Clash' is still a great knife, no matter how you slice it (no pun intended). It's very nearly the perfect size for an EDC knife; not too small and definitely not too big. It's VERY sharp right out of the box, the blade is perfectly centered (at least on mine), it opens VERY quickly, locks up like Fort Knox, there's zero blade wobble, it's easy to unlock and fold up (like a true one-handed knife is SUPPOSED to be!) and you'd be VERY hard pressed to find a better OR more knife for the money.

In short, if you're looking for an excellent EDC knife that won't set you back a couple of hundred bucks, the Kershaw 'Clash' could easily become your favorite knife.
