Like most people I wanted this for something other than lighting cigarettes/cigars.... it's really a 12-volt power outlet. I wanted something for the top of my dashboard to run GPS, detector, hands-free, etc without draping wires all over the place. So I needed a unit that would be sun resistant and had a dust cover... this unit is an excellent solution and doesn't glare like a chrome socket would. And it's very sturdy, with a high-quality feel.
And for safety reasons you really need a cover if you're going to install an outlet with the opening facing up... gravity is always "on" and the combination of an open outlet and a loose paper clip could be a disaster, so cover it up when not in use!
This probably would have been a better solution:
BLUE SEA 1016 DUAL USB CHARGER SOCKET TWO USB PORTS WITH

But no, I haven't installed it in a boat nor exposed it to water spray and don't expect to, unless I leave the windows down at the car wash... which I won't do just to improve the quality of this review.

I bought this to allow us to power up our cell phones and electronics while boondock camping (power only with 12v onboard battery, no shore power). I installed this in a discrete location by the swing-down galley in our Coleman popup trailer and tapped into the 12v power for the Dometic fridge. Some say I should use an in-line fuse and in retrospect I may install one, but considering we're powering only cell phones, maybe an Android tablet, and occasionally a solar-powered lantern (yes, solar-powered lantern), I don't know that I have too much cause for concern.

Install was relatively simple, but took a little bit of time cutting a hole to allow the rear part of the plug to descend into, but allowing enough material on the sides for the screw to bite into through the screw holes pictured. The + and - markings on the back are very difficult to see, but they are there for indication of which wire goes where. The rubber cap/plug is great to keep dust, bugs, and small fingers out of, too.

All-in-all this is a great product and at a great price you can't match or beat at box stores or auto parts stores. The fact it sits so flush with the surface of the cabinet it's mounted in is an awesome bonus too compared to many I've seen that are quite bulky. I'm very pleased. I may even install a second on the other end of the popup trailer. Maybe.

Compared to the Marinco plug, this is just about 100% similar. The build, plastic thickness and type is so close you wouldn't notice anything different.
The cover gasket plug fits snug and secure. The male rear spade tabs are the same.
You'd think it the same factory.
A Marinco male plug fits on and works the same.
These are stamped "CE" on the back. I've recently had a Marinco female plug crack -off the back end plate, which others have reported.
For the cost of these, they're a great deal.
4 stars because I haven't installed one yet. I'll update later, but I can't see why it would have a problem.
I'll probably order another pair.

This is a great little power port. It mounts easily with a locking nut on the rear, then all you have to do is run your power lines to it. I've installed about 5 of these in various automotive applications and they are all functioning fine, many with years of use (one is almost 10 years old and still working just fine.) The attached dust cap is a nice touch.

Great product. Does what it is supposed to. I rigged a few of these around my 12ft Jon Boat so that I could have power front to back. These worked like a charm. I additionally bought some male lighter plugs which I soldered onto a few electronics such as lights and trolling motor. Great buy and definitely recommend!

The overall design and durability of this 12 volt female port makes for a quick and simple install. Both, electrically and mechanically speaking. I have been using it some since the install and it seems that it will last for awhile.

Not sure if I necessarily like the locking functionality or not at this point. Has internal tabs that the silver contact strips located on the sides of male plug ends can lock behind. My concern would be, after months of usage that these internal tabs made of very thin metallic material would probably break. Even if they do, the port would still provide the 12 vdc needed I presume
