Like most people I wanted this for something other than lighting cigarettes/cigars.... it's really a 12-volt power outlet. I wanted something for the top of my dashboard to run GPS, detector, hands-free, etc without draping wires all over the place. So I needed a unit that would be sun resistant and had a dust cover... this unit is an excellent solution and doesn't glare like a chrome socket would. And it's very sturdy, with a high-quality feel.
And for safety reasons you really need a cover if you're going to install an outlet with the opening facing up... gravity is always "on" and the combination of an open outlet and a loose paper clip could be a disaster, so cover it up when not in use!
This probably would have been a better solution:

But no, I haven't installed it in a boat nor exposed it to water spray and don't expect to, unless I leave the windows down at the car wash... which I won't do just to improve the quality of this review.

I chose this one specifically for a few reasons and in my personal opinion, it met every angle of criteria I wanted. As it sits, it looks like it was a Factory Install on my bike. You would not know it was an aftermarket add-on. It is not "exposed" to elements inside or out (which is one of the reasons I chose it.. for a Motorcycle.. Outside...) It has a Water/Dust cap that seats perfectly with no issues or pop outs. I did not use, or need to use the square plate to screw it down (other applications may require the use of it, Good to have for free?)Many other models i looked at had bare metal exposed on the bottom side (rust?) and cost near $7.00+Mine cost 4.99 + 4.99 shipping ($9.98)Pros: Price $4.99 - Water/dust cap - Not exposed top or bottom to weather.Cons: $4.99 Shipping cost (Need Amazon Prime!)
