A must-have for anyone that's serious about installing a dashcam.

A must-have for anyone that's serious about installing a dashcam.
I paired this with a BlackSys CF-100 dual-channel dashcam in a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek. Instructions that came with it were in Japanese but a quick google search for english instructions made them easy to find. Install was very easy and straight-forward. I recommend buying a couple of tap-a-circuit harnesses to make it even easier and eliminate cutting and splicing. They give you TONS of cable if you need it, and rather than having a birds nest behind my radio or under my kickpanel, I decided to wrap it in electrical tape and tuck them away. Without drilling any holes in my interior, this box was easy to tuck under my radio in the spare cubby compartment where the switches are easily accessible and the LED is in sight. I usually keep the switch off when I'm parked in my garage at home, but leave it on when I'm parked anywhere public to enable parking mode. If I'm going to be away from the car for more than 6 hours, I flip a tiny dip-switch to select 12 or more hours. The on/off switch feels a little cheap and wobbly, but seems to work as it should. My switch will see heavy use so I'm hoping it will hold up. Overall a great product at a great price.

The Blackvue Power Magic Pro is a very specific device: it is designed for you to hard-wire a Blackvue vehicle camera into your car's fuse box without draining your car's battery. This is a great add-on because it means your Blackvue can continue recording while your car is off--if you're worried about people messing with your car when you're away from it, hard-wiring it to the battery keeps it on.

The way the unit works is fairly simple: one set of wires branches to a tube that resembles a lighter socket: you plug the Blackvue into this. The other end both grounds to bare metal and connects to the fuse box. In the middle, we have the black box you see pictured here: it is an on/off switch, a red power LED, and six dip switches to control the configuration. The first two dip switches allow you to specify, when the battery reaches a certain voltage, the Blackvue should be shut off to prevent draining the battery to the point where you can't start your car. The next four dip switches allow you to set how long the camera should be kept awake when you turn off the car, and it ranges from 6 hours to "infinite".

The Blackvue Power Magic Pro comes in a small box with a small instruction booklet that's fairly easy to understand. I really like the fact that they also offer a LOT of great YouTube videos to walk you through the installation and offer suggestions on how to mount your Blackvue camera. It took me an afternoon to run all the wires, install, and test the unit, and thus far it has worked perfectly.

If you're a bit adept at automotive wiring, this shouldn't be very hard to do--just be sure your ground wire goes to bare metal and all your wiring is kept tied and bundled well away from moving parts or your feet, and you'll do fine.

If you have any of the Blackvue dashcams, this is a MUST HAVE item because it enables the camera to continue to record while your car is parked and the engine is turned off. If you live in a big city where you have to do a lot of parallel parking, you definitely need this so that if someone bumps you when they're trying to pull in or out of a space in front or behind you, you'll get it on video.

How long it'll keep going for it up to your car battery, but I usually get 8-12 hours of recording time after a 10-minute drive. It will last for upwards of 16 hours when used after a long road trip or a day of driving around.

The only problem I had was trying to find a place to ground it to chassis. If you're going to opt for this instead of the battery pack (and you really should since this is WAY cheaper), check the area around where your fusebox is and make sure there's somewhere to ground it first. You may need to take it to a professional mechanic if you're unable to find a suitable grounding spot (remember, it should be bare metal - not painted metal). Also go to an autoparts store and get a couple fuse taps that are the right size. I had to make two trips to AutoZone because I didn't realize my fuses were mini low profiles.

I've been using this for a few months and so far haven't had any issues. I was worried that it would kill my car battery but so far (knock on wood) that has happened.

    Out of the Box:

The unit with the connection unit, and more wires than you would normally see, double sided tape, mounting screws and a manual. Also, I had this installed in early August, and therefore wanted a few months of operation experience before posting my review.

    Pros:

    Light weight
Mountable with double sided tape or Screws
On/Off switch (more details on this in the cons section)
Dip switch programming (From 6 hours to infinity recording allowed all with auto shut off if battery reaches low point)
    Dip switch programming for voltage
    Wires can be easily hidden
    Prevents main battery from discharging

    Cons:
Depending on how you install the unit, direct wiring or fuse box results will be different. I had to do a direct wire because my fuse box was in the engine compartment (I know dumb), and therefore it presented a few issues I bet the manufacturer didn't think would be a problem. If you happen to have an AUX port that does turn off when the car is off either instantly or on a pre-programmed set time delay. After some testing, the power switch on the unit doesn't turn the LED on/off but only indicates what you want to happen depending on the circuit you are connected to. If you are connected to a circuit that stays on for up to 30 minutes, the Power Magic Pro will "assume" that the ignition is still on, and therefore will not shut off. In my case, the circuit stays active for 10 minutes, and then the power gets cut off when the switch is in the "off" position. If you leave it in the "on" position, then the programming of the toggle switches take over. So be aware of this during your installation since Blackvue doesn't cover this in the manual.

Plug in hybrids - My unit is connected to a 2014 Fusion Energi, I had to do further testing. If I turn the car off and plug it into the wall charger, the Camera and the Power Magic think the ignition is still on, and therefore keep recording. However, if you allow the Power Magic Pro to shut down the camera, and then plug the car in to charge something interesting happens. The Power Magic Pro doesn't come on, but the camera senses power from the live circuit, and goes into record mode. Something else I bet Blackvue never thought of happening. I have to unplug the camera power while it is in the garage to prevent hours of garage recording. A small price to pay for the security of the dashcam. 'Again, not the units fault, but rather another gotcha because Blackvue just didn't do a lot of research based on cars to be installed into.

Manual. The manual doesn't describe how to install direct wiring to well. Since the number of "hot" wires is different than you might expect.

Double sided tape - This really depends on the part of the country you live. Double sided tape never works well in Texas, so it loses its power to stay attached to the surface very quickly and it just dangles. So you have to ask yourself, Do I really want to drill holes in my dashboard or whatever this is mounted to for a secured mount?

    Installation:
Initially, I was going to install this on my own, but when I ran into the issue of the fuse box being in the engine compartment, and couldn't find the firewall pass through port and the car's manufacturer couldn't tell me where it was either, I decided to have mine professionally installed. Honestly, unless you are an electrician for cars, especially with an electric or plug in hybrid cars, I wouldn't risk it.

    Bottom Line:
This product works as advertised, and is a great unit for keeping tabs on the power management for your camera system. This is important so that your battery doesn't drain completely. I know I listed several Cons, but these are listed here for your information since all the research I did on the unit prior to purchase didn't mention any of this.

    ***UPDATE***

6/2017 I have found an issue with the hard wiring process. Unless the installer gets a power wire that is on constantly, the unit will power off when the system cuts power to that wire. Which in my case turns out to be 15 min. Upon talking to several Blackvue dealers, they suggested having the power line be connected to the flasher power line, which as power constantly, thus allowing the Power Magic Pro settings to work for you. So be aware of this when you install!

    Recommendation:

    Damn Good Buy!

Great camera, picture quality is excellent. First of all, of course, we checked if it re cords clearly license plates, and it does! Of course depending on a time of day, angle and stuff like that. But most of the time it does record license plates. And sure we don't only use it for accidents: we have "backup" photo/movie every time when see something really beautiful but don't have time and/or place to stop. It very easy to remove from the holder and download movie. And I do love the fact that I can even see what's going on on the parking lot (cloud service).

But it is your own car, not leased, I'd recommend using professional installing. As you'll never see a cord, nothing ever be on your way, and it is convenient as it starts recording right when you start the car.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not cheap but does the trick
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 6, 2022
First impression was it seemed very flimsy and quite expensive. I bought it to replace a cheaper version that was absolute junk. Have had this fitted for about 6weeks now and itseems to work fine. At least my car still starts, not like when i fitted the cheap version. I guess you get what you pay for. Fitting is fairly straight forward as long as you know what the inside of a fusebox looks like and have a diagram telling you we hat each fuse is for. This is on the cover of the fuse box for some cars, but an easy Google search if not.
