For starters I think Toyota should and definitely could do a better job, this isn’t worth the price that we pay (not blaming the seller) however I don’t think the alternatives would be any better. Not that I’ve tried anything in this price range. I’d value this at $200.If you want to put anything substantial up there than get something else, I bought it mostly for looks, if you wanted to put a surf board or a small cargo carrier like Thule filled with luggage that should be ok, I wouldn’t put a canoe up there! Installing was easy enough however some things to keep in mind: After removing the factory gutter trim with a small plastic crowbar I took one of the long screws and pushed them through the painted tape where the threaded holes are and hand threaded them into the roof, removing any balled up goo from the tape. Clean the roof well where the sticky tailpiece will attach, attach the self adhesive washers to the bottom of the rack and the bottom of the goofy shaped metal brackets. After securing the brackets to the roof set the bar by aligning the plastic push pin and finger tight or loosely fit the long screws into the roof, then the hardest part is the short screws into the goofy metal bracket! You WILL need to insert a chopstick or something aluminum into one of the 2 holes and force it to align while threading in the other hole…. Don’t cross thread! Then do the second one, use something sturdy enough like a chopstick although mine only worked on one side then broke and I had to scrounge a 1/8” aluminum rod I had lying around to align the other side. (.22lr cleaning rod) if you use something hard like steal you may mess up the threads! Once these 2 screws are tightened down then tighten the remaining screws that you already started. You should acquire a good set of the small torx bits for your 3/8” or 1/4” socket driver (don’t you dare use a drill or one of those foldable torx sets) I have an older set of bits and they are a little worn and they gave me some trouble, had to dig around for new bits, when tightening into that goofy bracket, you will need a new bit with lots of downward pressure while PROPERLY ALIGNED! This took me under 1 hour because I was being extra cautious and you should be too! but it was very easy and could probably do another one in 10 minutes. Take your time and align those holes!

4.0 out of 5 stars Replace the included bolts with hex bolts before you start!!
Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2018
First off, the package arrived with the bag of screws taped to the OUTSIDE of the box, literally hanging there by one piece of tape. Also, there were no instructions included, so I resorted to YouTube, which was actually a pretty huge help.

That being said, it took me nearly 2 hours to install. The driver's side rail didn't line up right, so I had to "force" it, which was an extremely difficult process... But I got it done. I was able to get all of the bolts in without stripping, except for one of the small blue ones in the front. I would definitely drive straight to the hardware store after purchasing this and replace all of the bolts that come with it with hex bolts, I promise it will be worth the trip and time!!

It looks good, and seems fairly sturdy once installed. It kind of reminds me of the old saying about getting hair cuts making certain things look bigger... Except having the opposite effect as the rails somehow make the wheels look smaller... Maybe thats just me... Darn you Freud
