It's a cult classic shocker, and it's still weird as hell! But it's still a good movie.

This movie is not of interest to everyone, only those that enjoy watching films that push the limits of what an audience is willing to watch. If you are a gore hound, then this probably isn't the movie for you, as it has hardly any gore and minimal blood. Not to say that there isn't violence, most of it just happens off camera. The real interesting part of this movie is the perverse acts that the main characters partake in. These acts include rape, murder, torture and bestiality. If you are interested in watching a movie that has very poor acting and a paper thin script, just to see what lengths a film may go to try to get banned, then this is the movie for you.
The director has an interview on the DVD in which he states that this movie was only made to shock people and make money. He said that they were wanting to cash in on the success of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While this movie is nowhere near the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, for the right audience, this movie has its place.

A phenomenal and perverse cult movie from the 1970s, filmed on the island of Mykonos. A young couple arrive in the off-season and quickly settle in to photograph the natives and keep a journal, but something is very, very wrong. Soon people are dying in horrendous ways. And those not busy dying are busy having sex in various combinations. Yes, a young goat is involved in one infamous scene, and there are Frenchmen, lesbians, unsavory hippies, and a horny shepherd who lives in the hills above the town and cinches up his torn trousers with a piece of rope. Here too you can witness the precursor of today's homosexual weddings; this was truly a film ahead of its time!

The demons have truly come to the peaceful little Greek island, and this strangely beautiful little slasher film is out to shock amid the photographic splendor. Directed by Greek exploitation director Nico Mastorakis and with some very odd but seductive songs on the soundtrack. They will keep running through your head long after the fake blood has dried.

With a heated performance by Robert Behling as the handsome but self-righteous angel of death, Christopher, and a seductive non-performance by Jane Lyle as Celia his lover and muse. (They share a surprising past.) Just drop all inhibitions and enjoy it for what it is.

when i first learnt of this film i knew i had to have it, not becouse of the films reputation but simply becouse i could not belive that the greeks had made a film like this being greek myself and having to be draged to greek films when young, first on the greek island of samos and then in australia, by my parents on a weekly basiss . i found all of them boring and usally i was snoozing within ten minutes or so after the first feature had started by the time iwas 15, other kids could boast that they had seen friday the 13th or halloween or prom night all i could boast about was that i had caught up on some sleep at the latest alikee vouyouklaki movie, should my parents had taken me too see this i would have toped all my freinds at school then, after all how could some slasher film compete with this [human abuse, including] a person nailed to the ground and forced to drink paint, is but to mention some of the things that happen in this train wreak of a film, others have pointed out that this film is very sleazy well guess what they are 100% correct this film realy doese have something to offend just about everyone but thats what makes it such sought after dvd, and true cult film that breaks taboos as if the were kit kat fingers, the dvd itself boasts a very impreasive transfer in its orignall ratio of 4.3, very intreasting interview with the director as well as the three songs used in the movie preasnted as video clips. so if you like super sleazy filmaking (come on you know you do or why would you be here in the first place)grab this sit back and watch a true one of a kind film from greece
P.S iam toying with the idea of taking my parents to see a greek film now and puting this on the dvd player for them, they may not be to eager to see another greek film after this

Rape, bestiality, incest, lesbianism, murder, casual homophobia and racism, and a general sense nihilism and cynicism. THIS is the standard by which all eurotrash exploition flicks should be measured. It's un-P.C. and sleazy in a way even the basest horror movies no longer are. The sleaziness in this one is just off the charts. The hilarious 70s easy listening soundtrack and genuinely nice cinematography are just icing on the scummy cake. Needless to say, I loved every sordid second of it. One of my top 10 "video nasties." Sicko trash fans simply must seek this one out. Everyone else stay far, far away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Video Nasty Gets a Welcome HD Treatment
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2015
A bizarre 'nasty' is brought to life with the HD treatment - Arrow have done very well with this and the quality has never looked so good - unusual, sleazy but equally fascinating of a movie that we would never see now. Totally uncut. Beautiful landscapes of greece are combined with the grotesqueness of a dysfunctional couple of murderers . Some of it is laughable but some of it is really rather good. The soundtack deserves a release for sure especially 'get the sword....' and 'can this be love..'. The documentary is fascinating showing Mykonos now and comparing it to 1975. A comprehensive release which gives a decent insight into the making of this. Bit confused as it reports that the male lead Bob belling died in a horrid way shortly after the film was made but then he crops up in Cujo in 1983 - so this is a mystery in itself. Would of loved to have found out what happened to the lead actress and wonder what she is doing now. It's a shame they couldn't get hold of her - if she wants to reminisce about her past. A few don't. Despite her flaws and clearly she is no thesp I feel her innocent uneasiness enhances her portrayal especially where her reaction is so impartial to the horrid treatment of the unfortunate residents of the island. I think this movie doesn't get the full treatment it deserves. I do hope, eventually, all the nasties will be released and with Arrow and 88 filmsand the super treats coming our way 'SS Experiment Camp' and 'Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals' scheduled for future releases by 88 , us collectors of the bizarre are in for a real treat. The only issue is will soem of these get passed our censors who still are hung up on animal cruelty (not nice but still integral to the brutality of the picture - especially cannibal films) . Keep up the good work - these maverick little chunks of sleaze will always need a voice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Death and perversion on a shoestring
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 22, 2019
Island of Death a/k/a Island of Perversion a/k/a Cruel Destination (1975).
Reportedly made on a budget of US$ 30,000 by the Greek director Nico Mastorakis, this picture brought to you by Arrow Video is looking remarkably fresh with its vivid colours but still to this day, courting much controversy over its content and narrative.
There are the well established film directors who learnt their craft in shooting various types of film genre before moving over to the exploitation cinema such as Lucio Fulci (Zombie Flesh Eaters, The New York Ripper ), Joe D'Amato (Emanuelle in America, Anthropophagus), and Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust, House on the Edge of the Park) etc. and you have the younger talent starting out, and wanting to make a name for themselves such as Wes Craven (The Last House on the Left 1972), Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974) and with this film 'Island of Death' from Nico Mastorakis seeking to use their exploitative creations as a launch pad for bigger and better film work.
In this instance Nico confesses to having been heavily influenced by watching the cheaply made 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' as to just what you can achieve on a tiny budget.
The storyline was put together on the basis of just how much sex, violence, perversion and murder Nico could come up with for this film, which was filmed over just 18 days. The fact that, 44 years later, this film still packs a punch is testament to the director's skill as a director.

The storyline is about an English couple who arrive on the Greek island of Mykonos, and soon establish that the island is inhabited by a lot of undesirables, who have out stayed their welcome with their liberal promiscuity, and have tainted the local population of Greek islanders to the point of ruining the local custom. Thus Christopher (played by Robert Behling), and Celia (played by Jane Lyle), both amateur models at the time of being casted for the roles, give us the big reveal at the end of the film that they are actually brother and sister, (But pose as husband and wife) and decide that they need to do something about this "General lack of morality and perversion" and think nothing of eradicating the guilty parties in all manor of extreme ways.
The fact that they completely ignore their own perverted ideology during all of this orgy of sex and murder doesn't go unnoticed with the viewer, as during the build up to the numerous murders both Christopher and Celia are taking hundreds of photographs of their victims leading up to and including their deaths.
Particularly gruesome is the first killing where a painter is crucified to the ground, having been dragged around with a noose around his neck before having lime paint poured down his throat. Another scene where a mature woman entices Christopher for a bit of sexual extra curriculum activity, and who gets urinated on by him, and seemingly loving it, is badly beaten up by a disgruntled Christopher, and is taken outside where she is decapitated by a bulldozer. Another disturbing scene is where a lesbian who has sex with Celia is then set up upon by Christopher, who pours wine down her throat, then injects her with a heroin overdose before creating a mini flame thrower using a candle and an aerosol can to burn her face!
There is quite a bit of sex on display as well as rape, buggery, beastiality and many more killings to witness.
Time may have toned down some of the murderous scenes, and perhaps these are not deemed to be as graphic as some of today's special effects but, for such a low budget movie to still be around provoking controversy after all this time is quite remarkable.
Arrow have done an excellent job with this release, and have provided a separate booklet to accompany this uncut version of the film, written by film critic David Hayles. There is also an audio commentary of the film by the director and another film critic Calum Waddell, and a 2010 Q&A session with the director in Dublin celebrating (at that time)35 years since the film was made.

5.0 out of 5 stars 70s exploitation at its best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 2013
Story has it that Greek director Nico Mastorakis saw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre at the cinema and was impressed that such a film could make so much money. So with that in mind Nico decided to make an even more depraved feature than Tobe Hooper and therefore make even more money..! He succeeded in the latter but as for make more money..? well, we can only guess not. I won't bother going into the plot as I assume most people already know about this depraved and sick little flick. All that I will say is that as far as 70s exploitation flicks go this is one of the best. Depravity has never been in so much abundance as is on show here. This will not be in many viewers taste as we are subjected to rape, gay rape, incest, drug abuse, beastiality, torture, urinating on pensioners and even a fart in the face as a downright insult..! The list of depravity doesn't stop there but to list them all would take some time and spoil it for those that want to watch it for the first time... This is a very easy film to dismiss as trash but it's a lot cleverer than you may think, I recommend first time viewers to watch at least once more before proclaiming it as unwatchable sleazy trash ... for it is very watchable sleazy trash..! The gore is kept to a mimimum and the acting is pretty bad, but as the film progresses this is not really an issue. The majority of death scenes are very imaginative (the deaths involving a plane flight and bulldozer being the best..!). Also there is a cracking soundtrack provided by the legendery Nikos Lavranos (Destination Understanding being the obvious favourite of the 'cult elite'). I cannot recommend this film enough, it is superb, but then again maybe I need psychiatric help hahaha ... A MUST SEE..!
