What's in the box

  • Star Pointer Finderscope

  • From the manufacturer

Celestron 51630 Star Pointer Telescope Finderscope

    • The StarPointer Finderscope adds “point and look” functionality to any telescope!
    • This red dot finder keeps the sky right-side up, matching what you see with your unaided eyes
    • The adjustable red dot is bright enough to see day or night
    • Attaches to just about any telescope thanks to the small footprint, even works great with astronomical binoculars and spotting scopes

The Celestron StarPointer Finderscope is the way to go if you want the easiest way possible to locate an object and center it in your eyepiece.

A red dot finder, unlike an optical finder, has 1x magnification, displays a super wide field of view, and keeps the sky right side up and left-to-right correct, matching what you see with your unaided eyes. An LED creates a red dot, superimposed on a viewing screen, so you simply point the StarPointer to the area or object you wish to observe, look through your eyepiece, and if properly aligned, the area in and around place you pointed the red dot will be centered in the field of view.

If you like the idea of having some magnification, try installing both a red dot and optical finder on your telescope. Schmidt-Cassegrain and EdgeHD telescopes have multiple mounting bracket holes so you can get the best of both worlds. Just make sure to align both of them correctly, and you’ll get the best use out of each of your finders.

How to Align the StarPointer Finderscope

The first time you use your finder, you need to align it. This one-time setup procedure should be done during the day. Take the telescope outside and find an easily recognizable object, such as a streetlight, car license plate, or tall tree. The object should be as far away as possible, but at least a quarter mile away. Move the telescope left and right or up and down so that it is roughly pointing at the object. Look through the telescope using your low power eyepiece and move the telescope until the object you chose lies in the center of the view. Once the object is centered in your eyepiece, turn on the red dot. With your head positioned about a foot behind the finder, look through the round lens of the finder and locate the red dot. Without moving the telescope, use the two adjustment knobs located on the side and underneath the finder. One controls the left-right motion of the dot. The other controls the up-down motion of the dot. Adjust both of these until the red dot appears over the same object you are observing in the eyepiece.

    Red Dot Marks The Spot
The Celestron Finderscope I ordered was delivered the same day, on time, and packaged with care. The red dot star finder was easy to install on my Celestron 127mm telescope. Also, I enjoy using a red dot finderscope to locate celestial objects in the night sky. When I first got my telescope, I spent over an hour trying to get my gear into alignment. And it wasn't a perfect alignment, because, when I changed my eyepieces, I had to make some big adjustments to find the star or space object. But with my new red dot, Celestron 51630 Star Pointer Telescope Finderscope, I switch lenses and only have to refocus. It is a lot less of a headache when you're trying to set your telescope calibrations. It took me less than 10 minutes to get my telescope and finderscope aligned at the same object. At first, the little red dot was too bright. I couldn't see the planet or star I was browsing for. But I was able to use the brightness knob to dim it down so I could see the object I wanted to get into sight. This accessory comes with several installation plates to help you attach the finderscope to your telescope model. I had to use the screws from my old finderscope, none came with this one. Also included are the batteries, but don't forget to turn them off when you finished using the star pointer for the evening.I give this product 5 stars for the delivery time, packaging, installation, ease of use, and efficiency.

I got this finder scope for the old Meade Telestar that my grandad left me, and had zero problems swapping the old one for it. The kit comes with 4 base adapters; and I ended up using the one it was already attached to due to the spacing of my mounting screws, and the fact that there were some small hex nuts at the base of those mounting screws on the exterior of my scope. This seems to be a truly universal kit, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. The red dot is bright, and the dimmer switch works well. The overall construction doesn't seem extremely sturdy, it probably wouldn't survive a fall, but that's to be expected. I imagine dust will be annoying to deal with, but overall, this is totally worth the $20 I paid. Very easy to zero-in as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great basic finderscope with almost universal fit.
Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2018
This is a great little star finder. Easy to set up, and once aligned it will make finding a specific target 10x easier allowing more time to actually use your telescope instead of spending all your time hunting for your target. I am new to astronomy and quickly finding out that everything is expensive, there's always something else you will want to purchase. You could easily sink 10k in equipment and still have plenty of other items on your wish list. This starpointer was a pleasant surprise, it's affordable and well made for what it is. I recently purchased a used Celestron 114 lcm it was missing the finderscope, this one fit on with only a small philips head screwdriver and took me about 10 to 15 minutes to align by following the instructions included. That night I was able to bring my telescope to bear quickly on whatever object I wanted to look at. If you don't have a finderscope, or aren't happy with the one you have give this one a try. At this price, it's worth the investment. If it works for you it will make up for its price on the first night, if it doesn't you can send it back or keep it as a backup for future use. It comes with 2 or 3 different mounts to allow you to mount it directly onto your telescope. If you don't have a mount or your mount is occupied you can install it anywhere on the telescope and mount it with bolts. I would suggest you try to find a spot that works best for you and temporarily mount it with double sided tape before you commit to drilling holes. There are definitely better, fancier finderscopes but this one will get the job done at an affordable price point.

I bought this to replace my old broken pointerscope on my Celestron Firstscope 114EQ and this works very well. The adjustable light is very useful. Comes with many mounts so it would probably fit most telescopes. Extremely easy to adjust. Only took a couple of minutes. 5 stars.
