After not buying a new EDC knife since my 3oz Aluminum Handle Thumb Stud Buck 175 almost 20 years ago, I was looking for something lighter and with a better grip. Technology has changed so much that I ended up thoroughly researching every aspect before ordering 21 models mostly from here, and kept 6 for myself and 3 for my son. The knives that I kept and recommend are all listed at the bottom of this review.I did not keep this knife as I found the scales to be too slippery and the thumb stud opening much harder and slower than the flipper knives I tested. I discovered that the sweet spot for my ML hand size is something that has an ~4 1/2" handle and this is closer to 4". My recommendation for a knife in this size & weight is the: GANZO Firebird FH51, which has a great scales and very rugged D2 clip point blade and sells for ~$10 less.I found researching on here difficult and time consuming initially, as many sellers didn't show the necessary facts at the top and I had to scroll through many pages to find out key info like weight, which was in many cases listed in metrics that I had to convert. I recommend researching on BladeHQ, which wonderfully lists all the specs and necessary info in one concise location at the top of the listing, they buy from wherever suits you best.If you want to remove the pocket clips as I did since I prefer a true pocket knife, or to take a knife apart; you'll need a torx precision bit and driver set and I highly recommend the: CRAFTSMAN Precision 18-Piece Bi-material Handle Set Multi-bit Screwdriver Set sold at Lowes for $7.98.Lastly, If you appreciate the time and effort that I put into this exercise, then please click on the Helpful button located below. Thanks and good luck with your search!I am reviewing all the knives that I tested and the ones I kept and recommend are:Samior G1035 Small Slim Folding Pocket Flipper Knife - $24.98GANZO Firebird FH51 Pocket Folding Knife Anti-Slip G10 Handle with Clip D2 Steel Flip Blade - $25.99 Ortis Flipper Pocket Knife, 3.25" Black Stonewashed 9CR18MOV Blade - $39.95Boker Mini Strike Automatic Knife Black Aluminum 2.6" Stonewash D2 - $42.95Boker Burnley Kihon Drop Point Automatic Knife 3.25" - $49.95Buck Knives 840 Sprint Select, Easy Opening Ball Bearing Flipper 420 HC Steel - $54.99Buck Knives 0346 BSA Vantage Select Folding Knife, Rosewood Handle (Engraved) - $63.99CIVIVI Riffle Damascus Pocket Knife - 3.5-Inch Drop Point Blade - $89.25Spyderco Ikuchi Flipper 3.26" CPM S30V Stainless Steel Blade and Carbon Fiber G-10 Laminate Handle - PlainEdge - C242CFP - $140

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST pocket knife I've ever owned
Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2008
I got my first Gerber Harsey Air Ranger knife about 10 years ago. I returned another Gerber knife I owned to their repair center for repairs (Gerber guarantees all their knives FOR LIFE !!) and they couldn't fix it because it was a discontinued model--so they offered to give me a knife from their current catalog (of equal value) to replace mine. After looking through their catalog, I spotted the Harsey Air Ranger (all metal, with checkered aluminum grips) and I chose it. When it arrived, I didn't know if I liked it or not. It didn't look like any of my other Gerber's, and it was WAY LIGHTER! Gerber's have a nice heft to them, and this one didn't, but I put it in my pocket and hardly noticed it was there. Hmmm, lighter might be better for a pocket knife anyway I thought. The aluminum grips were very light, strong, and checkered like a gunstock. Even when wet, they allow for a good grip. I never baby a knife, (even if it's an expensive one) as I use my knives every day, from cutting cardboard boxes, rope, wires and wood. A knife must earn its keep--if its going to be in MY pocket. My original Air Ranger is still in my pocket, still working every day--just like me. When I've finally sharpened it down to a nub, I'll start using my new one from Amazon--though that probably won't be for a least another 10 years or so. If you're a working man like me, you can't go wrong with a Gerber Air Ranger which was designed by a world class custom knife maker (Bill Harsey).

If I could change one thing about the design of this knife, it would be to round off the square edges on the handle, to make it more pocket friendly. I've modified mine with a Dremil Tool, to perfection. It comes in and out of my pocket smoothly, and doesn't wear out the pocket liner on my jeans either. I've uploaded some photos, in case anybody is interested in doing the same.

My only beef with this knife is it's now only available in the half-serrated blade style. I prefer a smooth finely honed edge. Serrations are for steak knives and kitchen cutlery. I use a Lansky 3-stone hone to keep mine razor sharp. My blade has the original AUS-8A alloy steel, and you can shave with it. Several years back, on an extended hunting and camping expedition, I actually did just that.
