What I did was keep the factory head unit (HU) and removed everything else. The Honda premium HU in my car actually has pretty clean and stable outputs, even for a factory unit.
The problem I was having was that the line outs (speaker leads) signals from the HU were in that middle ground between the low and high level inputs on the amp. When attached to the low level inputs, there was this oppressive hum because the signal was too strong. When attached to the high level inputs, I was running the amp at full gains and the HU at 80% volume to have what I consider normal sound level. At full amp gain, I was getting some hiss.
This device allowed me to hook up to the amp's low level inputs and reduce the signal from the HU to a level that the amp could handle.
If you are having any hum or buzz, revisit your cable routing. You hear this all the time, but keep power/ground wires away from the audio signal wires. This applies even to shielded RCA and this device. I was still getting some hum until I realized my ground for the amp ran beneath the SCOCHE LOC, under the carpet. There is a black wire from the LOC that they say can be attached to a ground in case of 'noise', but depending on where I attached it to the body of the car, it made the noise worse. Play around with location and whether you will use it.
So, if you are dealing with sending a low level preamplifier RCA signal to an external amplifier, this is a must have if you are picking up engine noise. It is probably a must if you have a C4 Corvette and trying to use the Metra harness to bypass the stock receiver.
I read the instructions (as well as reviews) and was very careful when torquing down the speaker wires. I would have preferred to put wire ferrules on the speaker wires and then connect them to the LOC but I did not have faith the screws would be strong enough to crush them properly.
Ideally, I would have preferred to have a wiring harness (like on other LOC units) so I could solder the wires from my head unit and have a more secure connection.
The gain controls seemed flimsy - I followed the instructions not to push down as you turn them but had to apply an uncomfortable amount of force to break them loose initially.
In my case, I had to max them all out (I suspect due to the weak signal from the Android head unit) and the arrow on one was not aligned to the others.
That said, everything is working and sound is now good but I worry about how long it will last as the entire unit feels fragile. I also recall using one of these units in the past and having it fail so I do not have a lot of faith in it.
As another reviewer noted, the colors on the pre-outs were not correct (switched red/white for front back) but I used the labels as a guide.
All in all, assuming it keeps on working, it's hard to beat for the money. Just don't expect LCI quality.
Top reviews from other countries
I used it on my car with a factory amp, and that was the main reason to use this as I upgraded the head unit with an aftermarket one. The factory amp just could not digest the hi level input from the aftermarket head unit harness, causing all kinds of static noises.
This one got 95% of the buzzing noises. Sometimes I still heard a bit of noise.
I returned the unit in the end and went with a 2 of higher quality LOCs which completely removed the buzzing noise.
My car is a Honda CRZ which uses a hybrid system, and it's notorious for making static noise compared to non hybrid engine cars.
so maybe, this LOC will work for your car if your car is a pure gas car or elec car.
