Worth the money, no plastic knobs
I was hesitant at first to go with Starrett- because Mitutoyo has honestly gotten equally good. Starrett still sometimes is worth it- they often have better finishing than Mitutoyo.I was pleasantly surprised to see that unlike some of their tools using plastic (I'm looking squarely at your dial caliper rack gear Starrett 🤨) the lock knobs on these are tightly double row knurled black oxide steel- not plastic. I couldn't tell from the images and I actually thought they were plastic but they are metal so I am actually much happier.Another good commenter mentioned the light touch on the decimals being hard to read- he is right- and that is the only Improvement I could actually see making for this tool which is otherwise perfect in any way I could assess. The decimals on sub 1.0 mm stuff have a wider space before the numbers- and the dimple is maybe 0.001" or so deeper- so it's easier to see. The 1.00mm and other larger pitches have almost no space for the decimal indent, and it's slightly shallower in depth- making it a little harder to read. Starrett, if you are reading this- indent your decimal markers another 0.002 or 0.003" for better legibility. Thanks.I'm a millenial toolmaker & prototype machinist- I know my tools very well. I rarely buy Starrett anymore- but generally speaking, their gauges like this are finished superior to Mitutoyo. Even the leaves are radiused slightly at the base of each thread point, so they don't damage the crests of the gage. Nicely done, some Starrett toolmakers are still noticing the details.Worth the extra cost- true lifetime gauge. The lock knobs have individual springs under them and even recessed grooves for the springs to lay in under compression. They got all the details right but the decimal- and one other thing- box is marked 0.25-2.50 TPI- it should read mm pitch, or MPT (mm per thread) or so on. It is marked 156M, that's the only reason I knew it was the metric model I actually ordered and not something else. You will know it's genuine if it comes sealed in a Starrett branded plastic bag filled with oil. Mine did.If you need a full range metric thread gauge- buy this one. Don't even bother with lesser junk. Mitutoyo is worth it, this too, but everything else you're wasting your money hoping their pitch is right.

A well engineered device with an excellent range of leaves.

One minor nit is that the decimal points stamped on some of the leaves are hard to read. So the "1.00" leaf can be mistaken to say "100", which of course makes no sense.

A nice touch is that the leaves come with a touch of oil on them to prevent oxidation.

This gauge has the following leaves: .25, .3, .35, .4, .45, .5, .55, .6, .65, .7, .75, .8, .85, .9, 1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.25, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.75, 1.8, 1.9, 2, 2.5.

To be clear, the units discussed in the specs are in Millimeters per Thread (the distance between each thread). Amazon's description is wrong, saying it's threads per millimeter. I'll ping Amazon about this in a moment.

This metric thread pitch gage was selected for the renown product quality name, wide range of pitches and available at a low price. The gage was immediately used to accurately determine the screw pitch sizes of various metric screws that needed to be replaced.

First off, I am not a machinist or someone who uses a tool like this on a regular basis... I'm more of a tool collector. I bought this because I thought it might be nice to be able to eventually identify and organize random screws and bolts I have laying around.

As with the other Starrett products I own, the quality is first-rate, and I expect it's up for whatever I can dish out for many years to come.

These gages work well to determine the pitch of unknown threads on European clock parts. Once the pitch is known, a micrometer can be used to detemine the diameter allowing one to determine the correct screw size of the part in question. I found that the quality of the tool helped to easily get the best fit in determining the pitch of the unknown threads.

Starrett has yet to disappoint. These take any ambiguity out of thread gauging. I would highly recommend this set. Best of luck on your future projects.
