The hammock keeps him in the backseat (mostly). It's easier to establish and reinforce the boundary with the hammock in place, and it gives him more space in the back (since he won't fall off the seat). Once we put his bed and pillows back there he realized he can lie down, and now car rides are much easier on him (even once we removed his bed and pillows). He loves it too. Some days he walks up to the car and asks to sit in it, so we just let him chill in the hammock in the parked car.
The hammock keeps my seats free of dog hair (and dog blood, but that's a different story), and protects the seatbelts from his chewing. I love the velcro parts that enable someone to sit in the back with the dog without removing the hammock. There's also a safe space to stash things, behind the front seats under the hammock, though if the things are smelly things the dog can probably still motivate himself to get to them.
The hammock looks flimsy, but we've had it for [8 months so far] and used it on several long and short drives and it is still holding up great. It's easy to install and remove. All in all, great purchase, excellent value.
On the plus side: it's VERY heavy duty canvas fabric, appears waterproof, and it's very sturdy and well made. This would be excellent for a larger dog and I have no doubt that it would have easily protected my upholstery from my previous larger-sized dogs (each around 75 lbs).
The area of coverage is also very good. Being that it was in a very small car, it covered from one side to the other completely, with a little extra to spare.
BUT..... since this is a 2 door Mini, there's no easy way to set it up. You have to go in through the back to hook it on the back seats, toss the rest inside the car, then walk around to each side of the car and push the seat forward to reach in and attach it to the back of the front seat, then back and forth to adjust everything.
That's not *so* bad because once it's adjusted you won't have to do it again, right? Nope. You get to adjust it every time because if you move the driver or passenger seats AT ALL the thing won't fit the same the next time you put it in.
In addition to that my dogs just weren't impressed at all and they quite easily ducked UNDER the thing in order to squirrel their way forward, right between the front seats where I didn't want them. Drat!
We tried a few more times but each time they got under it and into the front seats so clearly this was not a great solution for my specific dogs (a 10 lb baby hyena mix of some sort who is covered with the ugliest carpet-fur you've ever seen, and a 7 lb Chinese crested mix who appears to have exploded all her fur in an industrial accident.)
I'm giving it 3 stars because it really is a very tough, well made product- it just didn't work for my car or my dogs. If you drive a Mini Cooper you may want to consider some other option.
(My solution was to purchased one of those fleecy "cuddle cup" type dog beds. It's cheap, lightweight, and one of the dogs is quite happy to curl up in it and ride quietly. The other, more active dog rides in a lap. Problem solved. lol)
UPDATE: I updated this review to 4 star because I discovered this works quite well if the back seats are folded down. It protects the entire back of the car from all the hair and claws and this is especially nice since we've taken a two different road trips (California to Louisiana and back again), then moved from CA to LA, then adopted a 3rd dog. While this still doesn't work for me the way it's set up in the picture (my dogs are small and just weaseled around it and into the front seat) it works really well as kind of a drop-cloth for the folded down seats/hatchback area. If you have larger dogs that can use it as pictured, or if you don't need 4 seats in your Mini and can fold the back seats down, then this really is a great option.
