Having trouble starting your torch? Give us a call or see how to properly start your torch kit below!
How Do I Properly Start My Torch Kit?
Starting with everything off and closed (Propane tank and needle valve) slowly crack the knob of your propane tank about ¼ to ½ of a turn. This will provide plenty of propane flow, depending on the level of propane in your tank, to provide a large usable flame. Next, you need to wait about 5-10 seconds for the propane to fill the hose. You will then slowly crack your adjusting needle valve about ½ a turn, and then proceed to light the torch. Following this procedure (also listed in your torch kit's instruction booklet) will prevent the safety valve from engaging and prohibiting your use. If you find that you have turned your kit on too quickly, shut everything off and give the P.O.L. safety feature time to reset (about 1 minute). Hint: Neither the tank valve nor the needle valve on the torch needs to be opened all the way to get a usable flame.

Customers are mixed about the flammability of the blowtorch. Some mention it shoots out an impressive flame, while others say it starts many unwanted small fires. The flame does not go far, and it is hard to keep a 400,000 btu flame for large jobs that take more than a few minutes. On the plus side, it is great for starting bonfires and firepit logs, but it can also ignite anything flammable.

Oh my gosh! This tool is so much fun to use. We easily figured out how to use it (you just turn on the tank valve then turn on the wand valve and light it up with a stick lighter) and instantly set a roll of field fencing ablaze. The dead weeds and vines disappeared in a glorious blaze and we were able to complete our project with no weed interference.
Later, I decided to clean up some more weeds and fence line with the Red Dragon 400,000 BTU garden flame thrower. I burned up some large weeds that were trying to go to seed in my vegetable garden. Having hit the seedpods with 400,000 BTUs of flame, I have no doubt they will not be producing more weeds in my vegetables. I also decided to clean up about 100 or more feet of fence line. We have a very invasive Asian grass that attempts to take over the property every year. This stuff is a nightmare and will choke out any and all native plants I have ever seen. It took about 10 minutes to burn out the Asian grass along the fence line. I love my Red Dragon.
The one complaint I have about the Red Dragon 400,000 BTU garden flamethrower is its lack of effect on fire ant mounds. No matter how much sand is in the fire ant mound, you cannot encase the mound in glass with a blast from the red dragon wand. It was a bitter disappointment.
I am a 51-year-old woman. I am somewhat small. However, I was able to wear the Red Dragon on my back for a couple of hours and use it with no real problem. It was heavy. I did feel the weight of the unit and did have a bit of bruising on my shoulders the next day. However, it was totally worth it. I think wearing a more substantial shirt would have helped.
I really love this tool. I only wish I had tried it sooner. It is great for cleaning out the cracks in stone walkways and patios. It is perfect for fence lines. (However, be sure the grass on the other side of the fence isn't still half dead on a windy day before you use this. Don't ask.)
I paid full price for the red Dragon 400,000 BTU garden flame thrower. It was worth every penny.
Really shines at killing weeds when they are small. Will work on larger weeds, but it takes more time and at some point it's almost easier pulling the really big ones if the soil is soft. Grasses and things like ivy often return, but it seems very effective on most weeds.
We started with the 100K torch, squeeze valve, and backpack. Used that for over 5 years and recently added a 400K torch with squeeze valve and backpack. I think the 100K is the most versatile if you are spot weeding. It's easier to control the heat when close to things you don't want damaged by the heat. The 400K isn't 4X faster, but it does speed things up a bit if working in areas where you can just blast away.
Customer service was great. We had a problem with the belt on our first unit after a few years and they sent a replacement promptly - no charge. Everything else has held up well.
If there's any sort of fire hazard it's best to have a second person with water at the ready. If working alone it's especially important that you have water ready - running around with a backpack and hot torch trying to uncoil a water hose is no fun. In over 7 years of use I've only had to break out the water 4 times. When working alone it's critical that you at least glance back at the areas you just burned every few minutes. Three of the four times I needed water was when something smoldered and then ignited five to ten minutes after being initially burned. Had I caught it sooner I could have simply ground it out with my boot. Every time I needed water was when I was pushing it by burning around bark chips, pine needles, straw and tall dry grass.
On the pro side, it produces alot of heat. There is no need to scorch the ground where the plan is. Once it wilts, it will die in the next few yours. This tourch produces more heat than is needed to do the job.
On the con side, it is hard to keep a 400,000 btu flame for large jobs that take more than a few minutes. The problem is that so much gas is being removed from the tank so quickly that the tank becomes cold. As it cools, pressure reduces. I never had the flame go out but the heat produced is drastically reduced. Yesterday, it was about 75 degrees out and the dew point was near 75 as well. After 10 minutes of use, the tank was sweating hard as it was colder than the dew point. As I kept using it, the flame dropped, the tank cooled more and I had a layer of ice in the tank that was pretty significant. I let the tank rest about 30 min or so. When I reused the tource, the flame was almost back to normal.
Improvements: It would be nice to have control on how much BTU power you pull from the device. Maybe modify the handle or add a jet to get 50,000, 100,000, and 200,000 btu settings. I bet if you can make this adjustment, tank cooling would not be as big an issue and you could maintain a consistant flame longer.
