Lots of reviewers are mentioning the lack of instructions. Here they are: Hold the tool with the black bit adapter up and the stainless handle down. Notice the (upside down) L and R markings on the black collar. Holding the bit adapter stationary in one hand, push the stainless handle in and turn it L for loosening and R for tightening. That's it.
What may be confusing:
1. L and R are upside down when you're holding the tool correctly for adjustment.
2. When you hold the tool so the letters are right side up, the R is on the left and L is on the right. (A clue you're holding it wrong!)
3. It's important that you think of rotating the handle not the adaptor. If you (incorrectly) hold the tool with the handle up (so the letters are right side up), push in the black adapter and rotate it toward the L, for instance, you will be set to tighten.
In summary, hold the tool with the handle on the bottom, so the R/L are upside down, then rotate the handle not the bit adapter. Good luck!
PS: Get a non-marring 4# dead blow hammer and you'll have very little deformity, no sparks, etc.
Just hit it with a sledgehammer...
and it'll do the trick!
It's a tool I will use again.
Overall, it feels pretty solid. It's a heavy piece of equipment but I felt confident that it wouldn't shatter when I smacked it with a hammer.
Overall, it saved me some cash & did the job so I am happy!
