MONROE QUICK-STRUT ASSEMBLIES

The first and only Quick-Strut. Monroe Quick-Strut assemblies are unmatched in quality, durability and fit. They simplify the installation process, including everything needed for strut replacement in a single, fully assembled unit with no need for a spring compressor.

Quick-Strut units feature high-quality steel, application-specific coil springs to restore ride height and strut rods which surpass the OE flexibility standard, maintaining structural integrity in the event of a major road impact.

Monroe QS
Monroe QS

Restore your car, light truck, SUV or CUV back to OE-quality ride performance and drivability with a Monroe Quick-Strut assembly. Including all the components required for strut replacement without the need for a spring compressor, this complete strut assembly features the strut, coil spring and strut mount preassembled for easy installation. Strut assemblies perform two main jobs: perform a damping function like shock absorbers and provide structural support for the vehicle suspension by supporting the spring and holding the tire in an aligned position.

CAUSES & CONSEQUENCES OF STRUT FAILURE

Like many parts on your vehicle, struts are subject to wear. The rate of wear depends on a wide range of variables, such as road and environmental conditions, your driving style and vehicle load. Causes of worn struts include damaged bushings, exposure to the elements, loss of oil viscosity and gradual degradation of internal components over time. Driving with worn struts can result in problems ranging from reduced braking efficiency, cause premature tire wear, loss of stability and damage to other suspension parts.

IMPORTANCE OF AN ALIGNMENT

Always perform an alignment anytime replacement shocks, struts or other ride control parts are installed. Camber, toe and caster settings can all be affected by installing new struts. Failure to make sure the vehicle’s alignment is within factory specifications can lead to problems like premature tire wear.

IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING RIDE HEIGHT

Proper ride height is crucial to vehicle durability, performance and safety. When inspecting a vehicle, don’t just check the static ride height. The dynamic ride height – the ride height of a vehicle in motion – may tell a different story. The cause of dynamic ride height issues is often worn or damaged coil springs. Don’t just replace the strut – be sure to also inspect for and replace worn coil springs.

HOW TO PROPERLY INSTALL A STRUT ASSEMBLY

Avoid noise after installing a strut assembly with this four-step procedure.

  1. Loosely install 1 or 2 upper mounting nuts and position lower strut mount to steering knuckle assembly
  2. Install lower mounting bolts and lower vehicle to the ground
  3. Locate manufacturer torque specifications
  4. Torque lower bolts and secure upper mounting nuts in alternating pattern

Definitely not an easy install, but good product
I read a ton of reviews and watched a youtube video (http://youtu.be/Qp9OH13jIx8) on how to install this on a 99 tacoma. Pretty much everyone said to use a 2x4 to push the A Arm down and then have a second person put the bolt through at the bottom. I tried this for 6 hours last night and it simply wouldn't go down far enough. I also stripped the bolt when I was taking the old strut out. A very horrible experience that was draining in every way. After a good amount of prayer, I finally was able to come up with a better solution. Use a small scissor jack and have it push down from the top of the wheel well down on the upper control arm. I flipped the scissor jack upside down when I did this, so it dispersed the tension on the wheel well, since I didn't want to puncture a hole. I attached a picture of what I did. Do this when you are taking the old one off, and when you put the new one on. This allows you to crank down hard enough so that it gives you space to put the new strut on. And you don't need a second person to put the bolt through. I also didn't strip the bolt when I took it off since all the tension was gone. This worked a TON better and only took me about 45 minutes on a wheel. Reply if you have questions. The strut seems wonderful so far! My old one was squeaking a ton, and sagging enough to put tire wear on the inside of my tires. This rides a ton better, and no embarrassing squeak!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works ok, some deformity
Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2019
My old Tacoma seems to handle better since replacing both front shocks. The front end sits a bit higher, but a sticker on the shock said not to worry, it should settle back to the original level. The springs are every bit as stiff as the original Toyota springs. I was hoping for a gentler ride, but nope. I'll have a better idea if the shocks improved handling the next time I drive on a rough freeway at 80. That's when the old shocks felt kind of dicey.
Installation presented a challenge getting the lower control arm down far enough to get the lower bolt in. I ended up using a 5" C-clamp. Also, regardless of which way I mounted the upper studs, the lower didn't line up so I had to rotate the lower half of the shocks a few degrees. Hope that didn't damage them.
The stud on the top of the right shock is crooked (see photo) but it came assembled that way, and seems to work OK.
I chose shocks with new springs already attached because Tacoma springs are really stiff and I had a potentially bad near-miss a few years ago using a rental spring compressor, and don't want that to happen again. There is nothing wrong with the 18-year-old springs that came off the truck, so I could have replaced just the shock if I was confident in using a spring compressor.
By the way, there is a different part number for the left and right shock, ending in L and R respectively. Order one of each.

Taking off the old strut was not difficult, use a pry bar or 2 x4.the new strut did not line up perfectly to the Bottom bolt .stuck a screw driver in the hole an aligned it .I recommend using a piston jack when installing the new strut,.couldn't get enough height with pry bar.
Big improvement in handling corners, bumps etc..
