    I have a show type Jeep that has never been in the rain or outside in any inclimate weather... and the lock is stuck and wouldn't release the RotopaX 4.5 gallon plastic gas can. In order to get it off I had to severely damage the plastic can. As I forced it off by unscrewing it...it caused deep grooves in the plastic gas storage container. If it leaks and causes a fire...I will certainly be suing RotopaX. I have tried all the remedies using W-D40 and others, but that is not the problem, because the locking pin is not rusted, as it has never been left in a condition where it could be rusted. It is, and looks, brand new. I have a second RotopaX lock and for an additional set of RotoapaX 3.5 gallon gas and 2 gallon water storage containers and it is working just fine. This is a defective unit and I am putting the RotopaX company on notice that they need to fix their locks or rigorously test them before they send them to their customers. I would like to send the locked unit back for a replacement that the RotopaX has actually tested and is not defective from the git go. I would like to also send back the never filled 4.5 Gallon RotopaX gas can that is now deeply grooved for a replacement also.

    I'm giving this a 3 star review because you can't buy these locks all keyed the same so in other words if you have 4 of these all of them are going to have different keys which makes it a real pain in the butt when you go to unlock them. yes you could color coat them but why should you have to do that, I mean after all this company has to be making a killing off this rotopax stuff so why not give the consumer more of a choice. The Cons are: the caps and nozzle that come with them seem to leak if you don't screw the cap down really hard and I mean hard. Also the Nozzles that come with them have a spring in them that when you want to fill you have to twist and turn this yellow device and then tip up the can insert in to the tank and press down for any gas to come out, a real pain in the butt. I guess they have to make them like that for epa standards. The Pros are: I bought the flexible yellow fill nozzles that you can buy on Amazon for them and so far I haven't had any trouble with them leaking at all and the gas flows just fine out of them. Another Pro is that these look pretty cool set up right on your jeep.

    After using for a few months, and actually outside time of the lock measured in days, the lox broke locking the key inside. Luckily this happened when it was not holding gas cans. The warranty says if this does happen, you can send the entire unit to them and they will repair it............NOT SO!!!
    Rotopax response when I requested this repair was that you have to drill out the lock and they will only send you a new lock......ONLY...after you send them a picture of the drilled out lock!!!.
    I feel so ripped off and lied to!.

    Lock seizes after a certain amount of time. Basically you should only leave the lock core installed when you think theft might be a problem. Otherwise, keep it clean inside your car. I had to buy a whole new one of these to replace a seized lock, which prevented me from replacing the lock core. Ironically, it's still really easy to remove a Rotopax tank while locked -- just remove the bolts on the back. Arguably, this is a faster way to remove a Rotopax tank than the normal way if you were looking to steal it.

    A note: The new one they sent me could not spin freely. The two parts of the handle were too close to each other, and they were stuck on each other. If this happens, use a long socket to loosen the nut on the bolt (or maybe needle nose pliers), which lets the two spinning handles separate from each other.
