First things first thou. If you're going to install it, you should your research before actually doing the install. And be comfortable getting your hands into all those wire harnesses with wire clippers. Here's my experience and notes with my install on my Ford Taurus.
The antenna plug that the IS31 plugs into is in the trunk, behind the driver side wheel well covered up with that molded carpet/felt. This antenna port is on some sort of remote amplifier unit that communicates with the instrument control panel up front. If you want to install this unit in the trunk (which I did), you'll need to splice into the wire harnesses that run into the unit. And you'll need to look up the important wires to splice into for power which was a real pain as there's up to 3 wire harness connectors in the back and I had to splice into two different ones (12V always hot, left most harness - red/yellow; Audio System On signal, middle harness - light green/black). I also added a power mosfet (IRF510 if you care) into there to act as a switch using the Audio System On signal as a logic signal (could use a relay as well) so my IS31 automatically turns on whenever the radio turns on and it turns off whenever the radio is off. You could probably skip a switch if you don't care about the power drain while the car is off or you're not worried about overloading the Audio On signal line (I have no clue how much current that line will support).
I then ran a standard 3.5 mm to RCA 25 foot adapter cable from the trunk, along the doors and under the trim, under the dash, to a location up front which is easily accessible for hooking up to a phone/ipod, etc. I left the actual on/off switch in the trunk (pretty much always stays on) as it doesn't seem to interfere with radio reception aside from the intended FM channel picked for modulation. I can listen to all of the FM radio stations I care about while the unit is on.
I also had to buy a Ford Antenna Kit ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009UHHW/ ) because the existing antenna port was some proprietary Ford connector which didn't fit the iSimple universal plug. Make sure you get a kit that has both of the adapters as you'll need one to go from the Female Ford Antenna Connector -> Universal Female Antenna Connector and another to go from Universal Male Antenna Connector -> Male Ford Antenna connector.
Took me a couple of hours with a wire cutter, wire stripper, soldering iron, multi-meter, electrical caps, electrical tape, and a bunch of wiring diagrams to install. And a fair amount of research to figure out where everything was and how to wire everything up. Much more of a pain than I expected originally but its working well with no complaints and its pretty much invisible, can't even tell its installed with the exception of a 3.5 mm plug up front. I also never had to pull out the radio unit. All of the wiring was done in the trunk and pretty much just sits between the body and the molded carpet lining.
This little unit is a great device to add an input to your factory stereo. If you don't want to spend a bunch of money on a new deck and installing it, this this is the way to go. When I recently got a 2001 Grand Am, as my daily driver, I didn't really want to switch out my nice Pioneer DVD deck from the other car to this. Too much hassle and in the end, all I really wanted was an easy and clean way to bluetooth stream my phone's music to my radio.
This works do to that. I wanted my phone audio, through bluetooth connectivity, automatically - without any plugging in cords every time I got in the car. I didn't want a lot of wires hanging around. I also didn't want to have to worry each time I got in the car of having to press buttons, plug in things, and get things set up before each trip. I wanted an inexpensive, easy, install and go solution to accomplish this, and this modulator delivers.
Note: volume is slightly decreased, but that's a fine trade-off for the price!
So here's my set-up:
I had my factory radio which I didn't want to change out. The Grand Am has a decent enough Monsoon factory sound system that I was okay with. What I decided to do was run a bluetooth connection to the FM modulator that ran the audio to the radio. I bought one of those bluetooth receiver (one of those round ones with the buttons on it and a microphone on it) and hardwired to the switched power from the car using a 12v to USB adapter. Now that the bluetooth receiver was connected and powered anytime I started the car. The audio cable plugged directly into this FM modulator. The audio then passes through this unit and directly into the antenna feed that goes to the back of the radio. For the GM stereo, I had to get two adapters for the antenna. One, that went from female mini to standard male, then to this FM modulator, then the standard male out to the other adapter which converted the size back down to the mini plug, which went back into the factory radio.
Now, when I start my car, the bluetooth automatically powers, connects to my phone, and launches pandora (through tasker and a BT connection event)... instant and handsfree music every time!
Know, that with this unit, you'll need rca plug-ins. There is a level adjustment on the box, but you'll want to turn that all the way up as volume levels decrease though the unit.
Overall, a great little device that fit my situation! Hands-free, with a built in microphone from the bluetooth device, automatic music through the stereo. The only extra wires that are on my dash is just the short one coming out that goes to my bluetooth receiver. Everything else is behind the dashboard trim.
When you install this product, you are required to connect it to a 12 volt dc power source as well as a ground. As I understand it, one of the advantages of the ground is that the excess electricity within the system is released into the ground, reducing the static that can sometimes be heard over the music. I believe this is where my problem arrises. At first, the device plays crystal clear, without of trace of static. However, after about 6-7 minutes, static starts to arise very quickly, so much so that about 15 seconds after the onset of the static, the music is barely audible. If you flip the switch off and then back on immediately, the static disappears for a few seconds before quickly returning and reaching the same level as before. The only solution is to turn it off and leave it off for an extended period of time, and even at that the maximum amount of time is limited to a few songs.
Like I said before, I think the problem lies with the ground, but this is the first time I've done something like this so I'm not really sure. I was under the impression that if I used a bad ground I would hear a constant sound of static, with the volume of static being lower or higher based on whether your ground was better or worse respectively. In my case I can't hear ANY static for a period of time before being suddenly overtaken by a high level of static.
Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Could do with a liitle more gain on the output, but this may also be due to the limiting of the output from the tablet used as the source.
Does allow me to keep the car audio interior original and have benefits of modern mp3 players
