Customers are mixed about the size of the scanner. Some mention that it produces beautiful images in a very large format, perfect to print to 8 x 10 or medium format. So far, so good.
5 Stars
So far, so good.
So far, this looks like a very good product.I have an old HP Scanjet 4c scanner that I really like. However, it's outdated to the point that I would have to run it under Windows XP or older versions of Windows if I wanted to use it. In addition, I'd have to find a PCI SCSI card for it. The cheapest PCI SCCI cards that I could find for it would cost around $50.00 and there is no way to know if they would even work before buying one of them. Anyway, I loved the HP scanner but realized I would have to replace it. So I bought this Canon CanoScan 9000F scanner very recently. So far, it's working out very well. Below are some comments on it:I just scanned some old 35 mm negatives that were still in good condition. I found that I could scan these negatives at 2400 dpi and then resize them to about 30 - 35% of their scanned size and they still looked very good on screen. The screen I'm looking at is on an HP 2511x monitor. This is a very nice monitor. It's best to look at images at 100% size because some image processing programs tend to crinkle or put jaggies in images that they resize to fit the screen. You might also want to try using the Windows 7 Preview. I think Windows 7 viewer is defaulted to it's built-in Preview program. You can scan film clear up to 9600 dpi with this scanner, but I don't see why that would ever be necessary, and your photo processing software might not even accept a scan that size. The point I'm making is that you will get a plenty good screen image from a 35 mm negative with just a 2400 dpi scan, even if you reduce the size of the scanned image afterward.I also got some good ink prints from these negatives after scanning them at 4800 dpi. It might be possible to get good prints with a negative scan of less than 4800 dpi, though. The printer I'm using right now (the only one I have) prints surprisingly good photo prints using HP Photo Paper. My printer is an HP Business Inkjet 1200d. The prints looks pretty much like real 35 mm photo prints that you get when you take a roll of film in to your favorite drug store that does photo processing. In fact, I think my ink prints actually look better than regular photo processing prints. The reasons that they look better are the fact that the scans print very anyway and that you can process the scans with your favorite imaging processing software to get them to look the way you want. Most of these image processing programs have various auto adjustments to help you out, such as auto contrast and auto sharpen. You get Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 with this scanner, along with some other software. All of the software, especially the twain and other Canon software, seems to be pretty good.I have to say that this Canon scanner works better than my HP scanner did. The HP scanner would make mistakes on certain colors (or textures) sometimes. The HP scanner cost around $900.00 (on sale) many years ago, so it was very expensive at the time. I've had nothing but perfect color matches from the Canon scanner, so far. There haven't been any other problems.I was doing good scans very shortly after setting the scanner up. It takes awhile to learn all details of all the software, but it doesn't take long to just start doing good scans with it, if you've ever done any scanning before.I'll update this if I discover anything of importance that I don't know about the scanner now. So far, things are looking very good and I'd recommend the scanner, based on what I've experienced so far.Update, 3/14/2013: I had a chance to try out the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on the scanner and found it to work very well and be very accurate. I scanned a page of text and only found 2 characters that were wrong in the text file created by using OCR. This was better than I had expected.
