There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
It works by closing force while turning counter clockwise. the 3 prongs dig into the filter with increasing force as you increase twisting force.
As opposed to some other filter tools if you have an issue removing a filter and it slips like a filter socket then it just bends the filter some and then will continue to slip. This however will not hesitate to crimp further and tighten more as you continue to twist.
Overall a great new innovation to add to the toolbox if you're a DIY guy like me!
Would definitely recommend.
i attached the piece to my ratchet and in about 5 seconds and with a little bit of muscle, the filter came off swift an easy.
WARNING!!! - according to sears this should NOT be used to intstall filters. ONLY REMOVE THEM. they say you can really over tighten the filter using this so might as well steer clear. I honestly don't see why you couldn't use it as long as you were self aware of how tight it was getting but better safe than sorry.
MUST BUY!
If your filter is horizontal with a flat bottom this probably works well as is. If it is vertical (bottom down) with a highly curved bottom, and especially if your last filter was put on by someone who over-torqued it, this thing will make you nuts!
With a curved bottom down-facing filter it's quite a challenge to get it to grip the filter the first place and if you loosen your hold on the wrench even slightly it drops off. So it works better with a ratchet. That's OK unless you need more torque and room. If you need to use a breaker bar and an extension it's almost impossible to keep this thing on the filter (down facing curved-bottom filters especially).
Once I finally got a grip it punctured the filter, so no better really that the long screwdriver/hammer approach, maybe worse.
Two simple things would fix it:
1. Make the "claws" about 1 inch longer for filters with curved bottoms.
2. Add a set screw or some simple way to tighten the two plates together so the arms don't move around so freely. That way you can use it with only one hand!
I would not hesitate to pay an extra $5 for that version of this tool.
In the meantime, I'm going back to the band-type wrenches. The world needs a great oil-filter wrench that works in every application. Maybe it exists but I'm afraid this isn't it.
