This is my first knife from S.O.G and and i am very happy with the buy!
When ordering it I first was suspicious of the plastic handles,
(I recently bought a black Victorinox Swiss Army Knife and was not happy with the scratched covers)
but once I had it in my hands it proofed to be no concern at all.
They are matte black with micro-structure - just as i hoped it would be :)
On a weekly basis I am frequently using the knife and the extra wire stripping features,
so far I have to say that the blades are holding up very well and stripping is no problem.
The build is very sturdy and robust. All visible screws are T6-Torx and serviceable.
The 3x screws used to tighten the rotary points (of the blade, the 10-22 gauge wire-stripper
and the general wire-stripper blade) are a bit loose and might need attention over the time
of use (months to years?) to not get lost. I unscrewed the one screw at the blade-knob and found
they have some kind of lock-tite to prevent lost screws -
so i guess it will last a while before i have to re-tighten. I assume that extends to all screws used.
The main blade-lock has 2x small Philips-head screws (barely visible when looking into the "blade-canal")
and also holds the retention spring of the stripper-blade cover.
The main-blade seem to have 2 Teflon washers for smooth operation.
The clip is functional, though i think the design is a bit off.
I would have better liked to have circular holes as a pattern, but that is just based on visual detailing.
This design might be lighter & sturdier than what i have in mind...
One more thing: it seem to only work as a right-hand (RH) version.
I could see it be changed to a LH-version by switching the blade-knob to the other side,
but the clip can not be moved to the other side (a small cutout is missing)
and the gauge annotations are only on one side of the knife.
This knife is a great tool - i have it on me every day.
Hope this review helps?!
The gauged wire stripper - it's not going to replace your daily wire stripper or anything. Yes it takes about 0.2 seconds to pull up and down on the lever that some have complained about for some reason; but I found just the positioning of it and the size of the knife making it a little akward to get it into very tight spaces to strip a wire. This is by no fault of design, nothing they could've done there. In fact I use it all the time, whenever I need a stripper and for some reason I don't have my main one on me - even if it's 5ft away I'd rather pull this guy out and use the SOG instead (quicker). Very handy for the unsuspecting needs.
The spring stripper on the end - I've had no problems with. I've used it several dozen times, no issue or indication that it's going to break. I honestly don't see how it would unless I bent it back with some ridiculous force.
The hole strippers - Not much to say about that, pretty basic, only used a handful of times.
My issues with it, and reason for 4/5 stars are:
* The blade came overtightened and made it difficult to easily open out of the box. This was of course an easy fix to take off the center pin, cleaned it out, lubed it up, and put it back together with the perfect amount of torque. It now opens so easily, it's virtually as fast as any switch or assisted blade (and it's not assisted! IE legal in the USA). I don't even have to really flick my wrist all that much to get it to open easily. No it doesn't come open by itself or when I do not want it to, and no the blade does not have lateral movement as if it wasn't tightened enough. It just took a while of adjustments and lube to find "the sweet spot".
* My biggest gripe with it, and really my only, the pocket clip! I have no clue what they were thinking here when R&D approved but it is the worse clip I've ever had (in stock form). The end of it that curves back up then goes out to two points - is sharp! Not like it's going to cut you sharp, but its going to jab you and other things and hurt if you have it constantly clipped to your pocket. they protruded way to far and no reason to goto those two points, IMO. I ended up very carefully, and again with a lot of adjustments, bending the clip and specifically the end curve down some so it didn't protrude so far, and then grinded some of the points off with a dremel. It hasn't bothered me or really been noticeable since.
be careful if stabbing as the blade lock will fail and the knife will cut anything between it and the handle without modifying the locking steel. it can be made to push over the blade more completely so it actually locks, with a little filing. i also file the outer points on the bottom of the clip, as ive actually cut my finger while brushing against it, and it likes to catch on anything i squeeze past.
the wire stripping for standard wire is pretty useless, but has saved my booty 30 feet into a crawlspace or attic when discovering a situation requiring the wire strippers i left 30 feet away, but where this shines is the little end flap, that is just the perfect depth to cut the communication wire shielding on the minisplit a/c units i install all the time, and standard 14-2 like a dream.
blade isnt the hardest but takes an edge well and can be made shaving sharp
cheers
