Bring your life
Whether it's exploring the spectacular nature of the great outdoors or traveling the world with family and friends, we all have a passion for enjoying an active life.
At Thule, we share your desire to spend more time enjoying your passions - which means less time worrying about how to bring all the stuff we need. For more than 75 years, Thule has been creating solutions to simplify life's adventures. Our focus has been on developing smart, stylish products that are sound, high quality, safe, and easy to use.
Whatever your passion, whatever your pursuit. Wherever you're going, whatever you're bringing. With Thule you're free to live your active life to the fullest.
Quality you can rely on
We’ll never know what adventures you’ll be taking your equipment on. That’s why we develop our products to manage any weather, any temperature, and any terrain in the whole world. We’ve come to the conclusion that nothing else will do. Every new product is put through temperatures of icy northern cold and burning desert heat, long sessions of intensive UV radiation, a salt chamber for corrosion endurance, several pressure and capacity tests – and finally a machine that shakes it for a lifetime’s worth, simulating two trips around the world in less than a week. Yes, the Thule Test Center is kind of brutal. But that’s the way the world is. And since we only give the sign of approval to products that have had the whole world against them (and survived it), it’s no wonder we’re international leaders in safety and durability – or that we even exceed the standards.

BEWARE! Depending on the type of tie down straps you use, they can vibrate these straps. The double straps from our Yakima racks vibrated like crazy even with twisting during a 12 hour long trip with high winds and the back wash from many tractor trailers. We had to change to the thin Thule ropes during the trip to avoid the vibration and even with them had to stop once to adjust them. USE 3M PROTECTIVE BODY TAPE ON BOTH SIDES OF YOUR HOOD AND FENDER WHERE THESE STRAPS COME OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD (It’s the same stuff you would have installed for a clear “bra” on your car hood). It is worth the $12-15 bucks to save potential damage to the paint on a high end vehicle. The 3M tape wrinkled a little on the one side from the horrible vibration from the wind but protected the paint. We removed the tape strips after we came home as we usually haul the kayaks in the pickup truck for local trips. Just remember to watch a video on how to install the tape. It has to be wet along with your fingers to install the tape. I know it sounds strange but you squeegee out the water and it sticks without finger prints on the sticky part of the tape. Gotta love 3M.
Initially I used to hook ropes into holes under the front of the car. But, then I had to worry about ropes rubbing on the hood and bumper of the car, and angle to the kayak meant that the ropes were pulling forward on the kayak almost as much as they were pulling down. This made me worry about the kayak a bit.
These loops fix both problems for me. They bring the attachment point further back towards the load and eliminated the rope rubbing. As a bonus they also raise the attachment point up so you don't have to lay on the ground trying to find the right hole to put a hook into.
Installation was easy:
- I opened the hood of the car
- Located a bolt near the front
- Using a socket on my impact driver I removed the bolt
- Then I threaded the bolt through the grommet on the strap and re-secured the bolt into place (make sure the loop hangs out towards the tire)
- Repeated on the other side and I was done
Installation took less than five minutes from the time I opened the hood. When I'm not carrying a load on the hood I just fold the straps in under the hood and close it. When I want to use them I just pop the hood and fold the straps out before closing the hood again. Just that easy.
Tying down my load is now quicker than before, and I feel more secure in knowing I have a better angle to my load so that the direction of force is going to do more to stabilize the load and less to damage my vehicle.
Overall I'm very happy with these straps.
Be sure to bolt it to a metal part of the frame under the hood, my vehicle had two bolts conveniently located at the end of some weather stripping. The nylon is strong enough to hold, thin enough to fit through gap in hood, but smooth/soft enough no to damage paint (so far) on hood's edge. The gromet is about the right side to handle any size bolt one would think to attach this with.
