Great brew kit! I didn't use the instructions supplied with the kit, I went to a local DIY brew store and the ingredients kit I bought there came with instructions. The hydrometer was a little confusing to me at first as the instructions were very clear on how to use it. The kit should come with a graduated cylinder, but it doesn't for whatever reason. Definitely a good starter kit!
Great kit. Contains what it says it contains. The hole on the bottling bucket needed to be widened just a touch, but other than that all the equipment is in good condition and functional. Check out one of the many excellent forums on the net to get the information on how to use the equipment, as the instructions are less than adequate. I'd count off for this, but considering the nature of homebrewing, I don't know that they could give adequate instructions without including a full-on (and likely expensive) book.
My reasons for not giving a 5 star are: - For pities sake, a trial bottle of starsan would really be nice here. Cleaner does not equal sanitizer, for those of you new to this obsession -The picture on the box is really sketchy. Had I not taken the time to fully research the contents and reviews before I bought I would have been pissed. Granted, everyone should take the time to do that, but the picture on the box is borderline deceptive, imho.
I was really disappointed in the instructions with this kit. Same with the menu kit.
The instructions do not tell you what to do with the equipment. There are 2 6 gallon buckets and some parts.
You have to drill a hole in the side of one of the buckets to install the spigot. There are no marks and no directions. I used a 1" paddle bit. Drill high enough that the bottom of the spigot does not hit the ground when you set the bucket on the ground. Drill the hole about 2 1/2" from the bottom of the bucket.
The Hydrometer FLOATS at the level of the content. There is nothing in the directions to tell you what it does. I had to spend way too much time figuring this out to really enjoy it. I almost threw it away a number of times.
Specialty Grain: I used an Irish Stout brew. There is a bag of "Specialty Grains" with the kit. Now where does it tell you to add the specialty grain with the regualr grain. This I learned from another companies' video.
I am not 100% sure of my findings above. I have finally finished cooking and I have the bag of grains left over. I don't know what the gravity is. I would not recommend this kit to anyone unless there is someone with them to walk through the processes.
The kit comes complete with everything you will need to start your first homebrew, except a stock cooking pot which you will need to purchase separately. Unfortunately, the kit does not come with instructions as to what each part does and how to use it. I was able to obtain a short instructional DVD from my local home brew store which made it easy. It comes with Primary fermenting bucket, secondary fermenting carboy, and even a bottle capper. Biggest gripe is lack of instructions, but those can be found online.

This kit, plus a large pot for the boil, is all you need to get started brewing using malt extracts and partial mashes. You don't need to be drilling any holes or anything.
Do your homework and figure out how to use it. I've used this kit for many batches of delicious beer with no problems.
I would, however, recommend trying to get a better deal at your local homebrew store, especially if you need some advice on how to get started and what ingredients to use.
The end product of this kit was delicious beer. It had almost everything I needed to make my own home brew from scratch. This kit has enough ingredients to make about 50-60 beers. The only setback is that it does not have a clear instruction manual on how to actually make the beer. If this is your first time making it (as it was for me) I would recommend the book "Beer Craft: A Simple Guide to Making Great Beer" which will help guide you through the process. I also referred to some youtube videos (there a ton of helpful videos) to give some visuals for each step in the process.
