Product Description
Chromebooks are a unique class of mobile computing devices, designed specifically for Web-based tasks. They differ from traditional laptops in a few important ways:
Chromebooks run Web-based apps, not traditional PC applications.
Chromebooks are designed to be connected to the Internet. You can create documents and spreadsheets or edit photos on a Chromebook using Google apps designed for these purposes. The Chrome operating system will not load and run traditional PC software like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. However, files created in these applications can be viewed and edited using Google apps on your Chromebook or cloud-based applications like Microsoft's Office web apps.
You store your files in the Cloud, not on the machine.
To help make them thin and light, Chromebooks are built without large-capacity drives. So instead of storing your documents, videos, and photos on your computer, you save them to Google Drive (Google's Cloud-based storage service). Your files are password-protected and secure, and you can access them anywhere there's an Internet connection. If you know you'll want access to a file or photo offline, however, you can easily save it to the built-in solid-state drive.
The New Samsung Chromebook
For Everyone. The Samsung Chromebook is a new computer that helps you get everyday things done faster and easier. It starts in seconds, has virus protection built-in, and runs your favorite Google apps plus thousands more. The Chromebook comes with leading Google products, like Search, Gmail, YouTube and Hangouts, so you can work, play, and do whatever you want, right out of the box. Chromebooks are a unique class of mobile computing devices designed for Web-based tasks. They run the Google Chrome OS, perfect browsing the Web, sending and receiving e-mail, and video chatting with friends and family. You can easily share it with multiple people- switching accounts takes seconds, and everyone gets their own files, apps and settings. And it's simple to use. There's no setup, and your files are automatically backed up in the cloud. At just 2.4 pounds, 0.7 inches thin, and with over 6.5 hours of battery life, the Samsung Chromebook can go anywhere you go. It's built to stay cool, so it doesn't need a fan and runs silently. It also includes 100GB of free Google Drive storage (for 2 years), a built-in webcam, and dual band Wi-Fi to make it easy to connect to wireless networks.

Introducing the new Chromebook(see larger image).
Introducing the New Chromebook
Chromebooks are designed to use Internet apps to access software that lives primarily on the Web rather than inside the computer itself. You can create documents and spreadsheets and edit photos on a Chromebook using Google apps designed for these purposes, but Chromebooks do not run traditional PC software. Instead of storing your documents, videos and photos on your computer, you save them to Google Drive (Google's cloud-based storage service) and you can access them from anywhere there's an Internet connection. If you know you'll want access to a file or photo offline, you can easily save it to the built-in SSD for offline access.
Chromebooks are easy to use, and don’t slow down over time. They have built-in security, so you’re protected against viruses and malware. They come with apps for all your everyday needs, and keep your files safely backed up on the cloud. And with free, automatic updates, your Chromebook keeps getting better and better.
Automatic updates
Chromebooks automatically update themselves: all of your apps stay up-to-date, and you get the latest version of the operating system without having to think about it.
Get started without the setup
Chromebooks require almost no setup, so you can go from unboxing to doing in minutes. Unlike other computers, you don’t need to spend hours installing patches and software.
The Samsung Chromebook's dual core processor delivers exceptional performance and battery life in an ultra-slim package. And unlike traditional computers, it has no fan or moving parts, which means it stays cooler on your lap and runs silent (no humming, unless you're listening to music).
Stay connected in-flight
With your Chromebook, you can get online at 10,000 feet with free Gogo in-air internet passes. Your Chromebook comes with 12 free passes (estimated $150 value) that you can use over 2 years on domestic US flights. Visit

And I love it! A huge percentage of my laptop/tablet use is for web browsing and emailing. The Chromebook is purpose-built for both. The Chrome browser works just like it does on my laptop, and being able to have multiple browser windows open is a very nice advantage over my iPad. As you'd expect, the Chromebook works beautifully with gmail, Google Voice, and Google Docs. I wish it ran Skype, but since I've been using Skype and Google video chat and Hangouts pretty interchangeably over the past year, so I don't really miss having Skpe on the Chromebook.
For emails longer than a short paragraph, the Chromebook is hugely more convenient than my iPad. I've always loved the convenience of the iPad, but responding to emails that required more than a sentence or two was a pain. In the week I've had the Chromebook, I'd bet my iPad use has dropped by 75%, mostly because I now use the Chromebook as my default email device.
I didn't expect to do much if any document creation on the Chromebook, but Google docs works so well that I've found myself using it for short documents (the equivalent of Word docs) and spreadsheets when it's not worth booting up my laptop. I hadn't used Google Docs before, and was very pleasantly surprised by how easy they are to use.
Printing: I have two HP printers at home. One is a bit over two years old, and the other is about a year old. Both are new enough to be ePrint compatible. Configuring the Chromebook to print to these printers took only a minute or two -- less time and work than configuring printers on a laptop. Printing to either printer from the Chromebook is just like printing from a laptop -- same dialogues and everything. Slick and simple.
Although the Samsung Chromebook will work for anybody, it really comes into its own if you're already embedded in the Google ecosystem. Gmail, Google docs, Google Voice, Google video chat, etc. are ridiculously easy to use on this Chromebook, as you'd expect.
In terms of specs, the Chromebook is noticeably lighter than my "thin and light" laptop. The screen is a bit smaller than I'd like -- comparable to the screen on my Lenovo X200 series business laptop, whereas I prefer a minimum 13" screen. But it's a reasonable tradeoff to get a small size, light weight, and great battery life.
The battery life has been a real surprise. I used the Chromebook Thursday night, all day Friday, and Saturday morning on a single battery charge before it shut down. The shut down was a bit startling (no warning), but because the Chromebook stores settings, and because the docs I was working on are all in the cloud, everything came back exactly as it was once I plugged in and restarted.
The Chromebook starts up very quickly, even when doing a complete reboot. I typically leave it running, and it goes to sleep after a while or when I close the lid. When I open the lid or swipe the touchpad, it comes back to life in about two seconds. This is close enough to instant that I never feel like I'm waiting for the computer to start up. The experience is much closer to using an iPad than a laptop in this regard.
And the price is a bargain. A tablet with a keyboard would cost significantly more. (Speaking of price, the cost of this product on Amazon goes up and down dramatically because the device is still in very short supply as of Feb 2013 and stocks out regularly. If you see a price over two fifty, and you're not in a big hurry, wait a week or two and it's likely to fall back to that level.)
Bottom line: I couldn't really see why I'd want a Chromebook in addition to my laptop and tablet, but this device actually fits very nicely into a gap between those products. My laptop is bigger, bulkier, and power hungry; and my iPad is great, but is limited without an external keyboard (at which point it's clunkier than the Chromebook) and too expensive to upgrade regularly. The Chromebook has the efficiency, portability, and battery life of an iPad, but with a very nice keyboard at a fraction of the cost.
By the way ... a few years ago, I bought a "netbook" for many of the same reasons that attracted me to the Chromebook. But the netbook turned out to be slow (it was Windows based) with a bad keyboard and terrible battery life. The Samsung isn't like the old netbooks, which were basically ultra-cheap laptops. Instead, it's a very sleek machine optimized for web browsing, emailing, and Google apps (Google docs, Google video, Google voice, etc.). In a world that's going to the cloud, I have a feeling that laptops are quickly going to become horse-drawn wagons.
Hardware: Simply amazing. While there are many laptops that approach or equal the Chromebook for sleekness and many offer superior materials, all of these options are 3-6x the Chromebook price. The keyboard feels great, the trackpad is sizeable and responsive. Even closing the laptop is a joy. The hinge resistance drops off at about 10 degrees where precise detenting provides an almost magnetic pull to close the device fully shut. Lastly silicone bumpers complete the closure with a reassuring "thump" rather than a plasticy "slap". This effect combine with the extremely thin result make me smile a little every time.
Keyboard: I do wish some keys such as tab switching and full screen were provided in place of the window switching and maximize keys. Also, I'd enjoy "home" and "end" buttons. Overall the plastic appears durable and is the right material for a cheap laptop that will be obsolete within 2 years (the lifetime suggested by google's 2 year cloud storage service)
Screen: The display is good. I know that high end laptops have much nicer displays but many offer the same quality as the Chromebook. The real story is how high end laptops are incorporating $80 displays not that the Chomebook falls short of an Apple retina.
Camera: The user facing camera (webcam) is only VGA but is decent under low light and angled just right. I haven't tried the mics yet but there are 2 of them so I'm guessing it's fine.
Speakers: can get very loud and sound good on hard surfaces
Ports: the headphone jack is reassuringly tight. I haven't tried the HDMI, SD, or USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.
Computation: ARM processing was the right choice for the device. At times, I can't help but feel the device is slightly underpowered; opening a few heavy webpages can cause Rdio to stutter very briefly. However, I've managed to adjust pretty quickly to this minor limitation by keeping fewer tabs open. ARM really shines with regard to thermal performance. Even as I write these words in a warm room with the Chromebook on my fleece pajama pants, the laptop is barely warmer than my skin. The dead silent operation and lack of an exhaust breeze (or any moving internals at all) is extremely reassuring initially but quickly you stop thinking about such things entirely which is probably the point.
Chrome OS: The OS currently has a few limitations and bugs. Loading a dozen tabs can cause some to refresh and I've seen reports of some folks losing long posts during these refreshes. I write my posts in google docs which auto saves every few seconds so this isn't much of an issues for me. Some pages like Amazon instant videos and Netflix streaming (hulu works well) aren't yet compatible with Chrome OS (apparently both are being worked upon). I switched to the dev channel which allowed Amazon prime streaming to work initially but it has since stopped working. Most other things work very well. WiFi connections work very well and quickly. I have a tethering shortcut on my phone which allows me to launch tethering, pop open the chromebook and with a few seconds be loading pages. The screen wakes up after opening the lid within 2 seconds (~10 seconds from full rebooting). Heavy pages load within seconds and perhaps only 1-2 seconds slower than on very fast SSD driven desktops. My guess is that Chrome OS on ARM isn't yet fully optimized and that every 6 weeks (google's update cycle) the Chromebook will get slightly faster.
Apps: I haven't played with these too much but I've found that Citrix doesn't work for either my wife or my work logins. I use Keepass as my password manager and this isn't supported in the Chrome App store (I switched to LassPass). Chrome Remote Desktop is very easy to set up (perhaps I can help mom with tech support now!) but I haven't turned on my desktop much since I got this toy... Other random things like FitBit syncing via ANT likely won't work anytime soon. Over the weekend I'll be setting up cloud printing and hopefully getting access to my network accessible storage thru the Synology app. My hope is that as Chrome OS gains popularity, more developers will make more and better apps.
Extras: 100 GB of cloud storage is very generous and I doubt I'll be able to fill it anytime soon. The 12 GoGo in-flight passes will be very enjoyable during future flights and will be just about right for 2 years. While I wouldn't have purchased $250 worth of these extras - it feels like a great deal to make use of them.
As you can probably tell, I'm pretty happy with the Chromebook. Although the device clearly isn't a "full computer", the cheap price allows me to put more money into my desktop machine to make it an even better media machine. More importantly however, the limitations of the Chrome OS experience (closing extra tabs, a lack of system notifications, desktop files, etc) combined with the refreshing lack of heat or noise, allow for a distraction free experience. The closest technology analogy is probably reading on a kindle. I'm happy that Google hasn't felt compelled to incorporate Android into Chrome OS. In time this may work but for now I'm happy to be in "work" mode on my Chromebook. When it's time to play, I'll pick up my Nexus 7 or plot down at the desktop. Less is more; Chrome OS is my 5th screen.

Works with Bose Speakers!!
