Any mono socket, as on your radio/device, will make contact with 2 of the contact points on a stereo plug. That is all that is needed for a single speaker, like the Uniden BC23A, to function properly. NO adapter is needed. If you look in your user manual, Uniden states that only the left channel of the plug is wired, as the right channel is not needed (for a single speaker).
I have my BC23A plug directly into my Stryker SR-955HP mobile Amateur Radio (CB), which has a mono external speaker jack. The Uniden BC23A works fine and sounds outstanding, with plentiful clear volume with my radio at 40% volume and my BC23A's volume dial at about 30%-40% also. Mind you, these mid-volume settings are even sufficient in a very noisy 18-wheeler semi. The Uniden has a second set of paired wires, for the amplifier, that connect to any 12v source. This was relatively easy, as I just connected these to my radio's power source. I am very happy with the quality, sound, clarity, volume, and compact style of this Uniden product. The unit also has a top mounted push-bar switch for noise reduction, which is very effective for reducing undesired static and noise on the incoming signal (sound). Initially I was going to chose the larger (but unamplified) BC20, but instead chose the BC23A. Not sure how the BC20 sounds, but I'm more than happy with my BC23A purchase.
Compared to say the Vanco Big Mouth units or even the Cobra, it's very clear, though a little bassy, but that's fine. As for the BC23A, though it is a smaller size, it does offer amplified power over the BC20 unit that is larger. The sound can be slightly more "tinny" when amped up to max power, but it works wonders in loudness on just about any CB that you would use this with. I like to turn up the volume on the unit so I have more latitude on adjustment with the CB volume controls. I have this installed in the footwell of my Truck, but I can still hear it clearly with the windows down driving on the freeway.
So as many of you already know, yes, there is the caveat with the Stereo Speaker plug, you'll need an adapter or to convert it to a mono plug by soldering your own or having someone modify it for you, and yes, you'll need to actually supply clean 12v power to the speaker amplifier. If you have alternator wine in your power, run a clean power line directly from the battery (remember to use a fuse). If you don't want the hassle, the BC20 is a great speaker that will work just fine with your CB. In the case of my BearCat 980, the speaker offered almost identical output to the built in speaker when comparing the BC20. The only thing is the CB is installed in a concealed location necessitating the use of an external speaker.
As far as installation considerations go, a lot of cars manufactured as of late have side air bags as well as headrest airbags as standard options. Be very careful where the speaker is mounted. Some folks choose to use the B-Pillar of their trucks or cars to install the speaker, and watching some IIHS and NHTSA youtube videos on side impact crashes, the speaker will likely become a high speed projectile if these airbags are deployed. If mounted on the driver side B-Pillar, you will likely not be hit, but your passenger will certainly become a target, and vice versa.
The speaker has a power switch/volume control and a push button to enable a feature to improve the audio of noisy signals. I use this mode all the time because it seems to cut down on the hiss/static in the higher frequency range. There is a LED indicator on the face of the speaker that lights when the power is on.
The speaker can be turned up VERY LOUD and can easily be heard with windows open or heater fan on high speed. The audio can be turned up very loud without distortion. I have no complaints about the audio. I highly recommend an amplified speaker like this one over a non-amplified speaker.
Overall, this is a very good speaker for the price and I would recommend it. No issues with the speaker, even during cold temperatures of -15 F.
