About this item
- EXCELLENT RESOLUTION AND HIGH CONTRAST: Richly saturated and vivid colours are a must in the creation of lasting impressions. However, stray light within an optical system leads to a lightening of the image that is particularly noticeable in the shadows. This reduces image contrast, with the result that exposures lack contrast and appear faded. To avoid this, ZEISS combines various specially developed technologies to reduce the undesirable effects of stray light.
- ASPHERICAL DESIGN: The asperical lens design ensures consistent imaging performance throughout he entirefocusing range as well as shapness to the periphery of the image. The asphere's morecomplex surface profile can reduce or eliminatespherical aberration and also reduce other optical aberrations compared to a simple lens.
- SMOOTH AND RELIABLE AUTOFOCUS: The design of the autofocus system requires an extremely accurate shifting of particular lens groups. The focusing system of ZEISS lenses is designed to ensure a robust and smooth-running autofocus mechanism with the best imaging performance.
- FLOATING ELEMENTS DESIGN: Today's camera technologies and high-resolution sensors demand continuous improvement of lens performance. Thanks to the use of the latest floating element design principles, optical aberration effects in ZEISS lenses are reduced to a minimum throughout their entire focusing range.

Another thing, I am your average everyday amateur, not a pixel peeper.
When I was shopping around for a new camera form factor and end result quality was very important to me. So much so that I quickly landed on the Nikon J4. It was good, but did not meet my specific needs. So I moved on to Sony. At first I was thinking about the pancake prime for the e-mount- the SE20F28 by Sony, which as the name suggests is 20mm/2.8. However, 30mm equivalent seemed a little wide and reviews where not too impressive. While it would definitely help in my quest to have a small camera that could take stellar photos, that particular lens did not meet my needs- a "pocketable" lens with the ability to take great photos. Moving on I did look into the SEL35F18 and then I found my current gem. I decided to take the plunge and I am glad I did.
I purchased an a5100, body only with this as the only lens and I regret nothing. The camera keeps its small form factor with this super star of a lens. While obviously not (pants) "pocketable" it fits into a jacket pocket with ease without making any unacceptable sacrifices to quality and that is exactly what I was looking for.
The bottom line for me
The good-
Lens was perfect in terms of size and weight
The lens loves people, performs amazing for portraits
Focuses rather quick
Performs great in low light
What left me wanting-
I really wish the focus ring was knurled instead of rubberized
Bokeh really seems to drop off after a certain distance
Focus is a little loud if you want to nitpick
Long story short- If form factor/size is important to you without making any serious cuts to quality I cannot recommend this lens enough. The drawbacks would not deter me from calling this a good lens for any casual shooter.
But I have two complaints. First, the auto-focus mechanism is far from silent...or even from quiet. The whole lens servo system growls a bit louder than I would expect. It's particularly pronounced when switching the camera between playback and shooting modes. This is mostly just a curiosity to me, as I rarely need my camera to be silent. But for those who do need silence while shooting, this is NOT the lens for you.
Second, and somewhat more aggravating, the focus and aperture adjustment rings on the lens barrel are finished in a rubber-like material. That's fine, except that they're absolutely flush with the barrel and offer no textural differentiation whatsoever. It will take some practice to be able to quickly make manual adjustments without looking at the barrel...and even then you'll likely fumble. Surely, SURELY Zeiss knows that this is a weak user-design. Their other lenses are made of metal and feature significant sure-grip ribbing with varied widths and heights on their focus/aperture adjustment rings. Zeiss knows how to execute this crucial detail correctly. One can only hope that a future version of these premium-priced lenses will reflect Zeiss's vast user-design experience.
This Zeiss glass is lovely. I have seen comparisons ad nauseum considering softness here or there, or the over sharpness of the bokeh etc etc etc.
What is lost in all of this is that premium lens manufacturers such as Zeiss have decades of experience in producing lenses that give up sharpness and micro detail here or there on purpose for they are designed with what I call "painting" in mind. They are produced for their signature "look." This is obviously quite subjective. You like the look or you don't.
As far as bokeh is concerned, I've found that background selection is a major part of OOF smoothness no matter what lens one is using.
This Zeiss Touit is so nice that I am buying one for a Fujifilm X E2 that I have ordered.
I will not give up my D700, but mirrorless cameras have come far enough to strike my fancy. And the Zeiss Touit is a worthy companion and worth every penny.
What troubles me is that for some unknown reason the shipping of this delicate lens is beyond me. Why would you ship a $750 dollar lens with one thin layer of bubble wrap rubber banded around it in a loose bag and not a box?
Amazingly, it works.
