Not what I was expecting. It is not a battery charger. It is a battery replacement/ eliminator. You take the battery off, snap this on and plug into cigarette lighter. Now radio runs off the car battery. It doesn't recharge the radio battery.

Fits some (not all) UV-5Rs!

Worth it to just have a UV-5R in my truck at all times without fussing with a battery, but weirdly enough it fits my TIDRADIO UV-5Rs (both of them) like a glove, but my actual branded Baofeng UV-5Rs it does not (neither of them)?

It looks like the lip is just a little too tall to actually fit onto the branded Baofengs without maybe taking a Dremel to it, but I honestly have better luck out of my TIDRADIO UV-5Rs and it's six one way, half a dozen the other so I just decided to leave the TIDRADIO one hooked up in the truck for mobile.

Also it seems odd that it has the copper plates at the bottom as if it were able to charge (it does not and will not) the battery, because this is a battery eliminator, so while I laughed at a few people that missed the title of eliminator, visually it looks almost identical down to the charging port on the back, guess it was cheaper to repurpose the existing battery casing intact than make a new variant without the copper contacts already there?

It's super affordable, but it also feels cheap. When I was trying to get it to fit onto my branded Baofengs (again it is so weird it fits the knockoff UV-5Rs perfectly when it's branded Baofeng, but doesn't fit ACTUAL Baofengs) it felt like it was bending and creaked like, well... a hollow casing would. But the added benefit to that is that it makes the radio far lighter in weight.

I've been able to broadcast and receive just fine without any loss in power as stated in some other reviews, maybe I just got a good one, or maybe they updated it to address the issue?

It does get immediately warm, like five seconds after plugging it in, it was warm. My F150 turns off the lighter plugs after 15 minutes of the engine being off, but if you have an older vehicle I'd worry about leaving it plugged in 24/7/365, not so much the power draw but the back getting warm and then being on all the time... Seems like a bad idea.

Overall I would recommend it. If that changes, I'll update the review!

This product does not have any PROS so let's go straight to the CONS.

1. The product description says, "Car Charger" which is totally inaccurate. It does not contain a battery and does not charge anything.

2. When using this battery eliminator, it becomes so hot that you can't hold it in your hand.

3. I opened this device to find inside a LM317 voltage regulator which has a maximum current rating of 1.5 amps. The Baofeng UV-5R draws 2.0 amps on high power. See the problem?

4. The LM317 voltage regulator is fastened to the inside of the battery eliminator case USING HOT GLUE which turns to soup because the unit becomes too hot to hold.

Don't waste your money on this "looks nice" but doesn't work product.

I ordered this to replace my current battery eliminator due to a frayed cord. The new one is nothing like the one I had in the past. The cord is much, much smaller and flimsy. It will easily get tangled and I am sure it will wear out long before the old one; now 7 years old. The plug also feels fragile and in fact the bolt holding it together was loose in the bag. I tested the voltage output of the two I purchased. One is 7.6v the other 7.8v so they do provide the voltage required by the UV5r. Time will tell of their durability but I am skeptical. If purchasing again, I will avoid these and try to find the brand I obtained in the past.

This product is a battery eliminator so you can use your radio without a battery either in your car or like I use it, with a 12v power supply in my home. I am able to both receive and transmit (without any problems on low setting on my uv-5r. I do not know if it works transmitting on high power (I never use that setting). A lot of these eliminators just shut down when you try to transmit but this one works with mine. If it didn't then a little electronic modification would have been needed. lots of videos on YouTube showing this mod.
