So far, I've used it in the back yard. Cool fall nights, but no place in the yard for a permanent fire pit. Boom. With just a couple steps the stove is set up and you've got a fire. Setup truly is easy. The pieces are pretty much self-explanatory. The zipper case holding the unit is well built. The case is more than big enough for the unit. I've even added some firestarters and small kindling, as well as a lighter and ferro rod. It fills out the bag, but it's nice to have everything in one place as a kit. Despite numerous fires, everything still fits together well. If there's any bending or flexing from the heat, it's not affecting the setup or use.
I also took this out car camping. I suppose you could take this on a hike, as long as weight isn't much of a factor, or maybe it's just a short hike. But it's not really made for backpacking. I had some firewood as well as briquets for cooking. After throwing a couple handfuls of briquets in it, I was able to grill a nice steak and have enough heat for marshmallows and hot water.
This stove would work well for 1 or 2 folks to sit around, take the chill off, cook up a steak or burgers or dogs, maybe have a cup of java. This isn't going to be much help if you're looking to warm up the family, or cook for a crowd. It's just not big enough, obviously.
The two of us used this three nights (evening temperature about 70 degrees) and our camping rig is a slide-in truck camper.
Nice, durable heavy stock used for construction, except the actual grill component. The cooking surface (grill) folds in half, which is nice for compact storage, but the material seems to be too thin. I can't see it holding up to higher heat and repeated use. Also, on our first use, the cooking grill would slide all around while attempting to use a spatula to turn a couple steaks. My Leatherman pocket pliers were handy to use as a holder to steady the cooking grill on the charcoal basket, while I worked the spatula. The base is solid and doesn't move, just the top cooking grill. The next night, I used a pair of Vise-Grips clamped at the top of one side of the charcoal basket to hold the cooking grill in place. It worked well. Drilling a couple of holes in the charcoal basket, towards the top, would allow a couple pieces of wire to be twisted around the cooking grill and keep it in place, if you don't burn your fingers doing so. Rather than drilling holes and using twisted wire, a few all metal, spring-style paper clips (like the old triangle shaped Gov't clips) would probably work nicely (although they'd get caked in food-cooking debris while grilling, they're cheap and disposable clips). I'll need to devise a system for securing the cooking surface. No big deal.
This size Quick Grill (medium) was barely sufficient to handle two, good sized steaks (Porterhouse). The weight of the steaks wasn't an issue for the grill construction, but, again, my longevity forecast for the cooking surface component isn't good. You do need to be vigilant about turning them before getting burnt (I think someone else mentions this in a review). Cooking 6 hamburgers, there was plenty of room, and my burgers ain't small. The entire charcoal basket area gets covered in grease, and potentially/most likely burnt on, but it's flat and should be easy to clean after repeated uses. You can use anything to scrub it with, being stainless and a nice gauge (thickness). After three uses, I joked about using my belt sander to clean off the burnt grease and charcoal residue. I might not use a belt sander, but I'm sure a piece of 220 grit paper and a sanding block would make quick work of it. The lower portion of the grill assembly stays fairly splatter-free and it's easy to wipe clean. After a wipe with a paper towel to knock off the big chunks, I simply placed the soiled components in separate plastic grocery bags before placing them into the included storage bag. I remember wishing I had a small wire brush. A thorough cleaning will be performed after each trip.
The charcoal basket holds a good amount. Enough to last through two steaks and then 6 burgers, with little heat to spare towards the end of the burgers. You're charcoal timing and cooking style may be different than mine. I guess you could toss a few more pieces of charcoal into the basket before the second round of cooking. I like the size. It's adequate without going overboard on excess bulk and weight, two things I avoid in our truck camper.
When I first opened the bag and set it up, Origami came to mind. It's a clever, very compact design that's easy to assemble, sturdy and stable. It was fun to use and was much better than using the nasty grates that are on a camp site fire ring. I'll keep my eyes out for a thicker cooking grill and I bet this thing will last for years. I'd buy it again.
If you try and use wood, the pieces will be so small that they will burn out faster than they create a steady cooking temperature.
