I had an issue where I started getting codes: P0302, P0171 on my 4runner with 228,000 miles
P0302 is a misfire on cylinder #2.
The 4runner ran terrible, flashing check engine light indicating the misfire. This was a consistent misfire, always happening.
I figured the issue was a bad coil pack or plug wires. Swapped out coil packs, same issue.
I then tested to ensure the spark plug on #2 was sparking (something I should have done first). Pulled the plug, inserted it into the plug wire, and let it sit on top of the intake manifold so the edge of the plug would get a good ground. Started the engine, the plug was firing, but I also noticed that the plug wire was sparking from a crack in the wire. Thus the issue was the plug wire shorting out.
Installed the new plug wires, and the 4runner now runs great.
The wires have all the clips, and are setup in the correct configuration so you will get the hooked up and routed correctly.
Very happy with these wires, and hope they will last another 200K miles.
Make sure you replace the ignition coils with OEM parts too.
Only use the recommended spark plugs listed in the owners manual. Don’t believe the mechanics or parts stores who will try to convince you that the latest Iridium plugs are superior. They’re triple the price of OEM and won’t improve performance at all. Who cares if they truly last 100,000 miles. You should be replacing your plugs once or twice a year anyway.
