Product Description
Capture the power and beauty of wildlife, birds, travel destinations, and exciting sports action close-ups with this high-performance 150-600mm long-range zoom. VC (Vibration Compensation) and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) enable you to shoot crisp images of fast-moving, distant subjects handheld, while proprietary Tamron optical technology, including eBAND Coating, works to suppress flare and ghosting for impressively clear, vibrant images. Three LD (Low Dispersion) elements are effectively deployed to correct chromatic aberrations, a challenging problem when shooting at long distances and at long focal-length settings. Tamron's eBAND Coating and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating help suppress flare and ghosting for class-leading image quality.VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three ceramic ball bearings. The quiet high-torque USD motor ensures a speedy and accurate autofocus response. This new coating technique developed by Tamron deploys a Nano-structured layer (1 nm = 1/1,000,000mm) of ultra-low refractive index, with dimensions smaller than the wavelengths of visible rays of light. This Nano-structured layer coupled with the sophisticated multiple layer coatings underneath, yields significant anti-reflection properties, efficiently reducing undesired flare and ghosting to an absolute minimum to deliver sharp, crisp images. While covering a very wide range of focal lengths, this lens is remarkably compact and accepts 95mm filters. Its stylish design with signature Tamron tungsten silver finish and elegant brand ring incorporates a sturdy tripod mount to enhance both stability and ease of use. Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.

This is a great lens for wildlife, and I would imagine that this is why most people would consider purchasing this lens. One does not have to spook the subject by getting nearer to get a good picture. I got some stunning pictures of an eagle and a tom turkey, yet I was at least 50 yards or more away.
I think most people will be pleased with this lens. The quality of Tamron is quite evident in this well constructed lens.
Kone
The performace of this lens is excellent. Without getting into comparisons, I can honestly say that I have several Tamron lenses, along with many Canon lenses, and I have never been disappointed in the performance of a Tamron lens (or a Canon lens, for that matter). The Tamron at full extension to 600mm will do a descent job at f/6.3 with reasonable light. Focusing is quick, since it has fast motors. The ability to switch from near to 45+ feet helps achieve fast focus when needed. I had no trouble zooming and focusing on birds in flight at the Savannah Wildlife Refuge during several trips. The images were sharp at all focal lengths and the color rendition was very impressive. I was very surprised at the impressive colors delivered.
That said, be prepared to track your prey with this lens because birds in flight, or any moving target, will require you to be prepared in time to let the auto-focus do its work to deliver a great photo. The focal length is as advertised on my Canon 5D Mk II full-frame DSLR but if you are shooting with an APS-C size chip you will be astonished at the 960mm equivalent focal length when extended (1.6x mag factor).
The lens construction is solid and zooming and focusing are smooth. With the lens attached to your camera, the tripod mounting clamp serves as a great handle when carrying the combo. But, like all long lenses, the quality of what you produce depends on what you put into the photograph. The VC does a great job but at 600mm I always use a high shutter speed when hand-held. My preference at 600mm is 1/1200 of a second shutter speed, which means I use auto-iso much of the time. If you buy one of these Tamron super-zooms you will find your own optimal setting to achieve good results. As always, "for the price" there is nothing on the market that will touch this lens. 5 Stars and highly recommended.
Landscapes in bright daylight were far superior to the native nikons. A big concern was stability at long focal lengths without a mono or tri pod, but the Vibration Control was perfect, even though there were some odd clicking sounds when it was operational. The photos showed no visible errors.
Action shots of gymnastics were perfect, even out to 300 or more mm. In the Nikon sport mode setting, even indoors, the shots were clear and clean. I used a monopod - a tripos would have been better, but since we travelled internationally for the event, the tripod purchased for the weight of this lens was too big to take. The video I shot of the competition was as clear as my camera could make it at 1080p. A great feature is the separate manual focus ring that can operate independently from auto focus. Another great feature is the tripod mount, mated to quick release mounting base. (Hint, because the lens is big and heavy, it is of great importance to have a strap on the lens itself when using by hand. It is too heavy for the camera interface and if you try to use the camera strap, it is likely you will break the camera. I created a strap system that worked superbly.)
Overall I literally could not be happier with this lens, it surpassed any and all of my expectations and I highly recommend it.
