I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander and I looked up a video on how to remove the plastic rear door covers and side post covers. Very easy once you see it done. I then mounted the camera above the plate, but this position does make me need to be more careful when opening the back, it is right under the latch. I drilled a hole the proper size to pass the camera cable than ran the cable up to the top and through the rubber wire tube that goes from the door to the car. From there is was a matter of routing the wire to the left side light cluster.
I mounted the rearview/monitor using the existing shoe on the glass after removing the OEM unit. I then wired the monitor directly into the wire harness that runs above the roof console. There is a switched 12V source and ground in the plug and I just used the crimp slices to tap in after cutting the monitor wire shorter and stripping it. Remeber to hook the monitor to a SWITCHED 12V line otherwise you will drain your batters. I did not need to use the 12V plug and route the wires around and it looks great.
The camera picture is a little washed out in the daytime, so I added a little tape to the light sensor and now the brightness is perfect. Night view is amazing and crystal clear. A great low-cost safety addition to my 2003!
Positive update: Well at three months The unit is working perfectly and I absolutely love how it works and how it helps me. I have learned a couple of things I think are worth sharing. While having nothing to do with the camera, its behavior has demonstrated that my transmission reverse switch is experiencing an intermittent malfunction. Sometimes when I am NOT in reverse the camera will come on. The only way that is possible is if the reverse lights have turned on. The camera has pointed to a switch malfunction. Sometimes backing up the reflection from window glass or a shiny door or wall will overwhelm the camera and flood out the image, but it always recovers. I have discovered that if I go into reverse near TV station uplinks or other possibly strong microwave sources I will get some display static, but considering the units operational frequency that could be expected, although it took a couple of times to figure it out. When the unit arrived there was an optically clear sticker over the camera lens. I left it on until it fogged up. I have been searching for this kind of optically clear, low tack sticker to use to continue to protect the lens but so far no luck. I reached out to the seller but apparently they cannot provide a roll of these stickers because they never responded to my inquiry. I truly am very happy with this product. I just need and want to find a way to protect the camera lens. regards, Ken C
1) The picture is too bright for night time use. I use all of my mirrors for backing up, always have and always will. If I glance up at my rear view mirror when backing at night up I can't see anything in the mirror and boom there goes my night vision. I did not have this problem with the OEM screen in mirror back up system in my Chevy Silverado which dimmed appropriately at night.
2) The mirror is a single pivot. That basically means its adjustable only for mirror angle not for height. I'm 6'2" tall and my rear view mirrors are usually pushed all the way up so that I can see under them to the right. I'm going to have to install a second mounting base higher on the windshield so that this mirror is not in my sight line to the passenger side.
Now for the good. The picture is bright and usable in all lighting during the day. The mirror is decent, while it doesn't have a day night lever it is tinted a bit darker that the OEM mirror which is a good compromise for day and night use. The backup picture comes up almost instantly when the truck is placed in reverse and does not flicker at all. I installed the transmitter high in the truck bed with a clear view to the mirror so this may help. As with any license plate mounted camera on a pickup truck the camera is mounted too low to give a good angle, and thus distance, to objects you are backing up to but it's still much better than looking over the tailgate and good enough for hooking up a trailer. The angle wouldn't be an issue on an SUV or sedan install since the license plate is higher over the rear bumper. The install was quick and easy but this was aided more by my mechanical and electrical ability than by the instructions which by nature are a bit vague by having to cover any vehicle.
The install was straight forward. The mirror mounted up on the OEM mounting puck and I wired the mirror to the dome light power in the overhead. Nissan made this easy, I didn't even have to test the wires that I spliced into since they were red and black for power and ground, and yellow to the door switch. At the back end the camera mounted easily to the license plate and I ran the wire over to the drivers side tail gate post. i was able to snake the wire up to the tail light cavity through existing openings. From there i drilled a hole into the bed so that I could mount everything else up under the top bed rail inside the bed. I initially taped the red on the backup light for power and went to a screw on the vehicle for ground as per the instructions and the camera did not work. Oddly this setup only gave me 6 volts even after confirming that I had a good ground. Something odd in Nissan's wiring? So I switched the ground wire to the black off of the back up light and viola 12 volts and everything worked.
All in all a good product for $140. An easy install and worth it if you have to hook up trailers or back up tight to other vehicles frequently like I do.
Update 12/12/19; I mounted a second puck for the mirror right above the existing one and now the mirror is the right height, the mirror is no longer in my sight line when I look to the right. It's amazing that 1 1/4 inch can make such a difference.
I changed the wiring from the dome light wiring down to the cigarette lighter plug. I knew the mirror would draw a bit of power overnight hooked up to the dome light power but I didn't think it would be too much considering how many things draw power when the car is off now a days. Any way after the mirror install my truck sat for four days and was a bit sluggish on a cold morning start up so I decided to change the mirror to a switched power source.
