What I like:
- Well, I enjoy working out on the Maxiclimber. I use it at least 30-60 minutes when I hop on. The intensity of the workout is based on how much effort you want to put in, as it is your body weight that is supporting the resistance anyway. I use this machine contorting my body in all different ways as I workout, to target different muscle groups more, and have only slightly tipped over. It well balanced and can handle really hard workouts if you upkeep with it (such as cleaning the the rollers and metal, lubricating the rollers).
- I appreciate that it can fold up for easy storage. While I normally just keep it open, there are times when the weather is nice outside and I want to take my workout outdoors. It's not a problem with the Maxiclimber, and I love to put a long climbing session in when the wind is blowing hard.
- I thought the foam grips might be cheap and not long-lasting when I first purchased the Verticlimber, but they're holding up well and seem suited for gripping I must do to successfully workout. Only one of the foam pads has finally started disintegrating and crumbling. Will just replace the grips with bicycle grips probably.
- It is low impact on your knees and back. I have some slight knee issues and feel no stress on them when using this machine.
What I don't like:
- I don't like how clunky the activity logger on the central part of the machine is. I am 6'0'' and found that my thighs would crash into the plastic casing sometimes when trying to go hard on the machine. I ended up just removing the black plastic case that was mounted to the verticlimber, as my phone can keep the time for me.
- I do not like how wobbly the extended top handles feel sometimes. In certain situations, when gripping the top handles and while working out, the top bars fit inside the connecting base with extra space inside. So if you are pulling down on a stride while climbing, you may hear a clanking sound. This has been happening to my unit since 2023, and I can feel when it happens and try to control it, but when I am exhausted from a tough workout I may not be able to stop the clanking as much as my hands pull down on the handles.
That's it though. The pros of the Verticlimber certainly outweight the cons in my opinion. I was apprehensive of climbing devices when I first started looking for home workout equipment, so settled on this affordable verticlimber. Now, I find myself wanting to use that more than anything else in my house or even going to the gym. I originally though I may want the upgraded version of this unit when mine finally breaks, but why ruin a great experience?
I was looking for a good cardio machine that can give me a hard & quick cardio/leg work out and after researching and thinking about it for a while, I decided to give this Maxi Climber a try.
Assemble was very easy and only took me 10 mins. clear instruction and very easy to assemble.
Construction of machine was not so bad. For the price, it is sturdy and as long as you have the right form to exercise, it does not wobble. By the way, I am 5'10" & 175 lbs. It make some noise while working out, but I guess that is expected and not that loud anyway. During work out, I was able to watch and listen to TV. Also it is rather light, so you can move it around easily.
This machine gave me a good 20 min workout. About 5 min into it, I was starting to sweat and in 20 min, I was sweating A LOT and I felt like it was enough for the first day of work out. Probably as I do more, it would get easier, but I must say that it was giving me a pretty good cardio and leg work out. I do not know about entire body work out, but definitely good for leg work out & cardio.
Now, about Cons.
To me, the main biggest problem was the foot petals. They are studded like the bottom of cleats, so doing it with barefoot wasn't ideal, however, I guess that wasn't meant to use it with barefoot. However, for me, the size of the petals were too small. It is not that my feet is big (size 10 which is normal for a man), but they weren't long enough that my inner knees were keep hitting the plastic cover in the middle of the machine. So I had to consciously step up and down bit outward. Just hope that they would had made the petals bit bigger and longer.
As I said before, as far as workout is concerned, it is pretty good. As long as I can keep my good posture and keep it going, certainly it can give me better cardio than running or other simple form of cardio exercises in shorter time.
Some people complain about knee pain. I also have some knee problems due to long running and playing tennis, so I have been taking medicine for over 10 years. I just hope that this machine would not give me any knee pain. We will see how it goes and I will update couple of weeks later on.
By the way, I would have, could have given 4 stars for this machine, but the reason for 2 star is that Maxi Climber's customer service isn't as good as it should be. When I received the machine, the "personal workout timer" wasn't working at all. Either it was broken or battery was dead. So rather than returning it for refund or exchange, I gave their customer service an email asking for new battery for the timer. Below is the response I got from Miranda from the company.
===============================================================================================
Thank you so much for your email. Sometimes during shipping, a few things can happen that would affect the life of the battery.
Remove the meter from the plastic base assure the white cable is connected tightly.
Try replacing the battery, you can purchase a battery LR44 at your local dept store.
Miranda Maxi Climber Customer Support Team
================================================================================================
They were asking me to buy the battery on my own when their product was defective or out of battery. So I emailed them back asking to send me a new battery, but no reply.
I do hope that they can send me the battery as soon as possible and if they do not response at all, I will return the entire unit because when and if I run into any warranty problems later on, I do not think that they will take care of it when they do not even have courtesy to send me one battery immediately.
UPDATE ON MAY 17, 2018
I have been working out on this for last couple of weeks. My first work out was about 15 min which was hard and got me sweaty real quick. Then, slowly, I increased the work out and now I am doing it about 40 min. Initially I gave it two stars but I upgraded to 4 stars because it is a good machine (even though I still feel that it is not really well constructed and have some doubt that it might break or go something wrong in a month or two...) and so far giving me very good work outs. Definitely it is tougher than running nor elliptical machine.
40 min work out gave me about 500 calories which I think more or less accurate, considering the work out.
anyway, I will update some more in about few weeks from now.

I've had this two days and I can barely walk! It's so simple yet clearly effective.
My hobby is hill walking so thought I'd get something to maintain / enhance my leg strength. I have no doubt that this will do the job at a fraction of the price of other apparatus. Don't be put off by the price, it may be cheap (relatively) but it is well made and solid. Took 10 mins to put together and every time I see it I climb on for a go! You can use your arms and legs, target triceps or biceps (just change your grip). You can just use legs too. YOU set the pace, how deep you go on each step etc. The counter doesn't work but you don't fatten a pig by measuring it. Get on, climb until you feel it working, repeat. Highly recommend.
Each week I progressed by adding more time to my workout. Today, I am clocking 1 hour sessions each workout. With the right music to pump you up and the Youtube MaxiClimber workout videos the time passes really fast. Since I started I have lost 3/4 of an inch from my waist. I am 5"3 and 118 lbs of winter fat. I wanted to burn at least 5 lbs but with my quarantine diet and snacking my weight remains the same but my waistline and my body is toning nicely.
If I should have a comment on negatives I would say that:
- standing on those pedals after 1 hour does hurt the balls of your feet.
- had to request replacement lower handle bars because the original would not fit in the slot. Got the new ones in 2 weeks
- it best not to exercise on a carpet because friction during exercise causes the metal to shave off. There is usually metal dust all over the floor.
- it does make a considerable amount of noise, at one point I thought it was broken.
- you need to go straight to the shower once your workout is done. Because in my case it is like a bucket of water was dashed on me.
I boast to my circle of friends about this equipment. All in all for you to get results you will have to dedicate time and passion. This is not an overnight muscle building machine but it does the job well in maintaining a toned structure.
