These are great radios we have no problem communicating twenty miles. We live in a very hilly area and communicated loud and clear with line of sight twenty miles or more. I don't know what the maximum range is. I use mine when I am traveling to monitor emergency traffic to be aware of accidents along my route.
You can program your radio manually or with a PC. Depending on the number of frequencies you will be using it can be time consuming to program your radio manually. I recommend that you download the free software called CHIRP and purchase a programing cable. This makes programing much easier and you can clone more than one radio with the same frequencies. There are several useful videos on Youtube that walk you through the steps necessary to program your radio. The disc that comes with the radio is not very helpful.
Several bands including CB radio.
The scanning mode works good. Possibly not as fast as a dedicated scanner but it meets my needs.
You can use this radio with repeaters for almost unlimited range.
I purchased an optional Nagoya antenna which increased the range/clarity of my signal.
I've been goofing around with this radio for a couple days and it seems to work well. I plugged the output into a directional coupler and a load, and the pickoff into a spectrum analyzer. The transmission power measured as follows:
Low = 32.41 dBm or 1.74W
Med = 37.64 dBm or 5.8W
High = 38.13 dBm or 6.5W
This test was done on a frequency of 430 MHz or so (the exact test frequency escapes me at the moment).
The thing that confuses me right now is the band selection of the radio. Regardless of whether you've selected UHF or VHF, the radio will let you select any frequency within the allowed spectrum, and I confirmed via the SpecAn that it does indeed transmit on the frequencies, regardless of the setting. I assumed that if you had VHF selected, you'd be limited to the 136-174, or likewise for UHF and 400-480. Perhaps since I'm a novice to this, there's something I'm missing here? I'm not sure.
My only other gripe right now is the charger. With the radio connected the first time, it glowed red as it was charging, and I returned late to find it flashing. According to the instructions, this indicates either a no-load condition, or an error. The directions say that when fully charged the LED should glow green.
So, I don't know if my charger is malfunctioning or not. Since I can't really use it w/o a license, it'll be a little while before the battery runs down and I need the charger again. Hopefully if I do have an issue, Foscam will warranty it.
At any rate, I very much am pleased with this purchase so far!
