From the manufacturer

Morakniv Craftline Basic 511 High Carbon Steel Fixed Blade Utility Knife and Combi-Sheath

Basic 511 is the most used of our classic knives. Appreciated and loved by professionals and hobby craftsmen for generations, it’s a proper Mora knife. This knife is designed and intended for Scandinavian construction workers. Here, our priority is a sharp and durable edge with a good grip, which means that the look of the spine isn’t a high priority feature. You are more than welcome to use any of our knives for your intended needs, but keep in mind that the spine will be 'raw' (not grinded) on most craftsmen and construction knives. Therefore, it’s not compatible with a fire starter.

About Basic 511

The solid finger guard optimizes safety and the new, larger-shaped handle makes the knife sit even better in your hand. The blade is made of high quality carbon steel, manufactured in Mora according to our secret recipe. The carbon steel also makes the knife easier to re-sharpen so you can use it over and over again.

However, keep in mind that carbon steel can be affected by moisture and corrosive environments so make it a habit to wipe your knife and oil the blade after using it.

Product Description

The Morakniv Craftline Basic 511 Utility Knife features a 3.6-inch fixed blade made of high carbon steel for high hardness, easy sharpening, and exceptional toughness. High carbon steels are preferred in applications that demand durability and frequent regrinding. The material is harder than stainless steel, allowing it to hold a sharper and more durable acute edge. An impact-resistant, large TPE rubber handle fits comfortably in the hand. And a finger guard provides additional safety. Included with the knife is a hard plastic Combi-Sheath, which provides a quick-connect feature for attaching a second knife and sheath. Morakniv has been manufacturing the highest-quality knives in Mora, Sweden since 1891. Mora Craftline Series includes sharp, durable, high-quality utility knives suitable for construction, trade and industrial professionals. The Morakniv Craftline Basic 511 Utility Knife blade is 0.08 inches (0.2 cm) thick, and 3.6 inches (9.1 cm) long, with a total length of 8.25 inches (20.9 cm); weighs 3.9 ounces (110 g). Limited lifetime manufacturer’s warranty.

Let me give you the lowdown and funky on this knife.I had some preconceived notions about this knife as well as Mora Knives in general.Upon first glance, they looked like cheap kitchen knives that you'd buy on TV and maybe stick into a tacklebox.I grabbed this one and the Companion and I have to tell you all, yes they are inexpensive but you're talking to a guy who grew up around blades of nearly all types and it sucks for me to admit this but, I Was Wrong.I was completely wrong about these knives. Let's talk about the Basic 511. It feels great in my hand. No hot spots whatsoever and the son of a gun is crazy sharp. It's not full tang which is what I prefer in my knives and the spine isn't 90 degrees for striking ferro rods but what it lacks in those areas, it makes up for everywhere else.I hacked this knife. Yep. What I did is as follows:1. I added a patina to the blade. This is easy as pie. First, grab a glass and put the knife, gently, tip down into the glass and fill the glass to the hilt with vinegar. Take the knife out and dry it off. Put the vinegar in a small saucepot to boil a bit on the stove. In the meantime, grab a file and file that spine just a bit. Once it's a nice, sharp 90-degree spine and the vinegar is boiling, carefully pour the vinegar into the glass and then insert the blade carefully, tip down. Leave it for about ten minutes, pull it out, carefully wipe with a paper towel, rinse, repeat until the blade is nice and dark. Why did I do that? To strike ferro rods and, since it's a carbon steel blade, it's kinda prone to rust. A patina gives it some protection. Once you're done putting your patina on it, give it a thin coat of olive oil for storing. Now you should be great2. I added some jute twine and a ferro rod to the sheath by wrapping it to the sheath with Parcord. This gives me, not only cordage but fire tinder and the means of striking it to start a nice campfire3. I added a slice of bicycle innertube to the sheath as a retention strap. With those three modifications, I was able to turn this thing into a light-duty bushcrafting knife. It's absolutely wonderful for my needs. If you need any confirmation, just have a look at the photos. I didn't spend much and I got every penny and then some out of it.

I’ve had this knife for 2 years now and just bought a couple more as gifts. I have yet to sharpen the blade and it still will shave hair off my arm.

This wont be the prettiest or most polished blade to by but for 10-15 dollars it’s amazing. This would be the best knife for filleting fish(though I have done it) but this makes a great camping knife. This works well for cleaning small game.

Great all around knife to use for a lot of things excluding fine use applications.

I considered a Chinese knife for $2 less, but then thought "why take the risk?" This knife has a great reputation, great price, and it's made in Sweden. China vs. Sweden? Hmm - what do you think is better? The blade is a bit small, but I just wanted something light to take camping. Some people complain about the clip/holder. I had no issues with it (I did cut off that extra tab for piggy backing other accessories)

I don't know what else to say other than, it's a Morakniv. Absolutely the best value small craft knife you can buy. The scandi grind makes it so easy to sharpen freehand that even an absolute sharpening novice can bring it to a razor edge every time. Be aware, this is a small knife meant for carving, whittling, notching, etc. It's not meant for heavy duty tasks like chopping or battoning. It's not a full tang knife, if you try those tasks with it you will end up with a broken knife. It's not a matter of 'if', it's a matter of 'when'. Use it for what it's made for and it'll last you a good long while. The handle is very comfortable, the factory edge is sharp enough to shave with, and carbon steel is a breeze to sharpen yourself. The only catch is that you'll need to maintain it pretty regularly. I suggest adding a patina with apple cider vinegar and oiling it every time you sharpen it, and after wiping it down when it comes in contact with water for prolonged periods. Mine is paired with my Mora Companion MG, with the 511 being a food prep knife and the Companion MG being a light duty bushcraft knife. Both are excellent and worth ten times as much as they cost, but are so reasonably priced that if you lose one or don't maintain it properly, replacing it won't kill you. They're excellent knives to learn proper care and maintenance with before buying more expensive knives, while still giving you the performance close to the more costly options.

I love this knife. It is easy to sharpen. Small enough to carry on your waist band/belt without noticing much. I even took a metal file and filed down the spine so I could throw sparks with my Ferro rods. Took about 10 minutes of filing to drastically improve the functionality of this knife. It's not full tang, but I have personally done some light batoning to process firewood with it without issue.

Buy this knife. You won't regret it. Heck - if for some reason you do, well you're only down about $10 bucks, so who cares?

I'm going to buy a few more to have around the house. I can't imagine finding a better carbon steel knife at this price point.
