works good
The body of the charger has a heavy duty rubber body that seems very durable, and the wire is much heavier than it needs to be for the current draw so the voltage drop will be minimal but mostly so the wire will be mechanically durable. The tethered rubber cap that protects the USB ports from dust and splashes of water seems durable and well fitted. Unless it's raining, I ride with the cap hanging free while charging my phone. Every aspect of the design seems durable and of high quality. It looks like an add-on accessory instead of an OEM option, but a well designed after market accessory.
I used 50 pound tensile strength low profile Cobra cable ties to secure the wiring and to mount the dual port charger to the left handlebar where it's only a few inches to the micro USB charging port on my RAM mounted phone that runs the OSMand+ app for offline navigation (no cellular or WiFi connection needed, only GPS).
The Amazon seller page was vague as to whether the USB charger can deliver a total of 3.1 amps, or 3.1 amps for each of the two USB ports. So far, I've only used a single USB port to keep my phone charged while riding and it's been adequate to that task.
I would include a picture of the installation, but I posted a backpack review several years ago showing a rifle in the backpack and now I'm not allowed to upload pictures.
This little guy charges quickly - yesterday I was able to charge up 16% in a 13 minute ride, and that was with the phone tracking my ride using its GPS.
The connection to the USB port feels sturdy - it's a tight fit which is nice. The waterproof cover is a great thing, and slides on and off easily enough. I'm happy with the build quality so far, and time will tell how well the joins hold up.
One notable item is that, because the harness is wired directly to the battery this unit draws power 24/7 and regardless of whether anything is plugged in to the USB port. The draw is very small, but it's conceivable that you could drain your battery if you either charge your phone while the engine is not running, or don't ride your bike for an extended time while leaving the harness connected. The workaround is to remove the fuse, which almost surely be housed in your glovebox/very close to the battery.
All in all, it's a great, easy, and affordable addition to any bike. Highly recommended.
