A Bit About Spyderco

Spyderco was founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser. Initially, the company focused on selling our first product — the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker— primarily at fairs and trade shows around the country in their Bread Truck. In 1981, the Glessers put down roots in Golden, Colorado and introduced the first Spyderco folding knife. That knife pioneered the concept of a round hole in the blade for one-handed opening, a clip on the handle for carrying at the top of the pocket, and the option of a serrated edge for aggressive cutting performance. Those features revolutionized the knife industry and literally defined the form of the modern folding knife.

Folders

EFFICIENT

VALUE FOLDER EDC

Designed from the ground up as a member of Spyderco’s popular family of affordably priced full-service folding knives, the Efficient proudly includes all the high-performance features and benefits that savvy knife users have come to expect from Spyderco knives in a format that suits practically every budget.

The heart of the Efficient’s compact, ergonomic design is its full-flat-ground drop-point blade. Precision machined from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel, its broad profile and PlainEdge cutting edge offer outstanding edge geometry for low-friction cutting performance.

Built on a framework of full, skeletonized stainless steel liners and a stout stainless steel back spacer, the Efficient’s handle construction provides serious structural strength. To keep the Efficient poised and ready for action, it includes a reversible hourglass clip that can be configured for left or right-side tip-up carry and a lined lanyard hole for easy attachment of fobs and lanyards.

Overall decent purchase

Overall decent purchase
Been using it as my edc to work for the past five months. It does a good enough job, budget steel so I do sharpen it weekly. It comes stiff out of the box, had to loosen it up and oil it a little bit. My biggest complaint is the finger hole access. I’m right handed and use my middle finger to flick open. The G10 material isn’t cut the same on both sides. One side is fully exposed, the other isn’t, making it uncomfortable to open at times. Other than that, solid knife and I plan to carry it until it breaks, because it also doubles as a pry bar at times.

My Benchmade Bugout is in the shop for annual maintenance, so I decided to try this one out. Spyderco is a venerable brand for good reason. This edc is excellent for what it is. The steel is solid and sharper than most folks will ever need. It's a very good looking knife. The proportions look just right. It feels good in my fairly big left hand. The action is smooth, but I can't imagine it will ever be good enough to flick open, like my Bugout. The linerlock seems to be about as good as that technology can get. It has a two step close, with a noticeable detent at about 45°. That takes a little bit of getting used to, but I don't resent that safety feature. It's got enough heft that you'll never forget it's in your pocket, but not much more. The two position clip is elegant and effective. In all, this is a great value. It's a combination of lower-cost tech that makes a credible stab at the more expensive edc's. I'm glad I got this one.

Looking at the pictures I thought the blade too wide for my tastes, and the handle seemed to dip in a bit much, like most spiderco's. I got it to try, and it's actually way more ergo than it looks in pics! The full grind makes for a very good cutter, having such a long acute bevel. The material is very grippy, and the knife's thin so doesn't print, and light so an easy carry. The clip isn't deep pocket as I prefer, but that's easy to fix.

Handle is easy to hold, a really good size. Most impressive though is the smooth as silk action! For a mass produced affordable production knife, it's amazing! You can easily flick it open with a finger, or open with your thumb. Way easier than it looks in pics!

Highly recommend, but now I have to look at spiderco's AND benchmades all the time, my wallet's groaning :)

One of my very first Spyderco purchases was the Spyderco Tenacious. I really wanted to like that knife but in the end I gave it away because the blade shape made it impossible to carry it in your pocket comfortably. One of the things I hate about some cheaper Spydercos is that the "Spyderhole" either requires aggressive handle cutout or have the knife blade stick out almost an extra 1/2" to clear the frame and that makes a really wide knife for no reason. This is the first "Value Folder" Spyderco that I absolutely love and this is what the Tenacious should have been. I have no idea how that knife is so popular with how big and unwieldy it is. I really enjoy this knife and here are some main points:

Pros:
✅ Fit and finish of this knife is fantastic; absolutely no blade play in any direction and the blade is perfectly centered when closed.
✅ Smooth action and the liner lock engages fully and is rock solid. Action is smooth enough for thumb flicks! The edges could use a little smoothing out to keep your nails from getting torn up but it does flick open easily.
✅ Metal backspacer that helps create a really nice premium look and feel (albeit a bit heavy).
✅ Comes nice and sharp from the factory (see video).
✅ Can be used with either hand. While the cut out is aggressive for right hand users, I have no issues opening and closing this knife with my left hand. Clip can be switched from right to left side.

Cons:
➖ Made in China, but most knives at this price point are.
➖ Knife is thicker than I'd like. I have a few Kershaws that are liner locks like this and are significantly thinner
➖ Knife feels quite heavy on the back end due to the steel backspacer. It would have been nice to have an aluminum spacer or individual standoffs to help balance the knife a little better.
➖ Pocket clip is not deep carry and in fact, because of where it is, the knife rides very high.

Additional Thoughts (not really pros or cons):
● While the pocket clip can be flipped for both right and left hand use, it can only be installed as "tip up." I don't have a problem with that as that is how I prefer carrying my knifes but others may have a different preference.

Conclusion:
If you are looking for your first Spyderco or even a less expensive addition to what you have, I would look no further than this knife. While in the past you may have been stuck with the Resilience, Tenacious, Persistence or Ambitious as your only option for a "Value Folder," I don't think you should even consider those anymore. Hopefully if this knife gets as popular as I think it deserves to, Spyderco will add more blade lengths to its "Family" to compete with the aforementioned blades. While it does have a few Cons that might put some people off, this is honestly the best knife you can get from Spyderco at this price range.

The knife is exactly what one would expect from Spyderco: sturdy and well-made, and if you maintain it, it'll last a very long time. The steel (8cr13mov) isn't the fanciest steel out there, but my experience with both this and a Tenacious made from the same stuff is that its edge retention is a lot better than you might imagine, given the way people talk about it online. Yes, you will need to resharpen it fairly regularly, but you'll need to do the same with any steel, and this one happens to be a very easy steel to get razor-sharp. I would guess that it all comes down to the heat-treatment during manufacture and the way you treat it as a user. If you know how to sharpen and maintain a knife, there's nothing wrong with this steel, and you ought to get many years--even decades--of use out of it.

I have always used Spyderco knives in the past because they are durable and well made. I decided a few years back to try and find a cheaper blade....I did find a few and they were cheaply built and didn't last. Spyderco is such a great blade for it's price and very well made. This particular knife fits well in the pocket and the clip fits snug to a belt or pocket. The size is just enough blade to do every day things like open boxes, whittle branches, or cut into a block of cheese....cleaned the blade of course! If you are looking for a good everyday carry knife, Spyderco does not disappoint and I have not found it's equal.

This is a Spyderco knife that was made in China.

To be blunt, this a poorer quality knife than a $20 Ganzo. The finish is rough, and it doesn't want to deploy with a flick of the thumbhole. You basically have to open it with two hands.

The only real positives here are the pocket clip, which is nice, and the size, which is smaller than most Spyderco knives, and any Ganzo knives. It doesn't have the overt appearance of a weapon.

It is slowly loosening up with use, but not nearly as good as a Ganzo is out of the box.

I would not buy this one again.
