Very simple unit, simple to hook up, simple to charge from wall if need be. Well constructed and long lasting.
Cons: Still a little expensive, but you get what you pay for and tech is still evolving. Maybe won’t t pay for itself in utility bills very quickly, but will pay for itself in peace of mind immediately.
Out of the box, my transformer is hot enough to make touching it uncomfortable after 2 hrs of charging, that's 125 degrees.
Customer service has been very supportive and mentions the transformers can normally get up to 130 degrees without having to worry.
A transformer will keep on getting hotter until the rate at which the transformer is cooled off by the air around it, is equal to the rate at which waste energy is thrown out of the transformer.
In this case, the designers have decided to put the transformer inside, on top of the box, for safety reasons, so that people won't touch it directly. In an enclosed space, with little air flow, sitting directly on top of the batteries... I had my cell phone resting on top of the lid, and my cell phone got quite warm as well.
The batteries are rated for charging, up to 105 degrees.
I recommend people take the power supply out of the box, and carefully rest it on a handle or something hard, where it gets lots of air, where it's not going to hurt anything or melt anything if it bakes. I suspect this will prolong battery life.
I would also like to see Goal Zero put more research into making the AC power supply be more efficient. Perhaps there could be two tiers, the regular one, and a value-addon model that runs cooler and chews up less electricity in heat. Or maybe they could sell a heat-sink shaped like a happy armadillo that you could rest your power supply in while it's busy warming up the room.
The unit runs a Philips DreamStation CPAP for about 4-5 nights. It weighs 45 pounds, thus the two handles. I count on it to provide life-sustaining power during hurricanes. All in all, very satisfactory.
Overall great product, I would recommend everyone to buy this product
If you use it too long above 1.5KW, it will turn off or reset, which is to be expected it can do a peak of 3KW, but a peak never lasts longer than a few seconds.
