Defective Power Lead
While hooking it up to my 25 amp switching power supply to program in Chirp. The radio would not start up. I thought my power supply had gone bad, but then I noticed the radio came with the polarity reversed on the male to female power connectors. I reversed the leads on my power supply and it started right up. I'm fortunate I noticed this before I hooked up to my Jeeps battery. Now I'm left to wonder about the quality control of this radio.

I bought this radio to use with Btech handheld GMRS units and it does so very well when paired with an NMO antenna. The range is fantastic and it does everything it says it will.

My only reservations are that the screen is a little small for my eyes (not the manufacturer or seller's fault) and my signal meter does not show that it is reaching its rated output. However, I have a cheap signal meter and the transmit power I am seeing is more than adequate for my use and close enough to rated output.

You can use this radio right out of the box but to make it sing you need the programming cable and some knowledge of CHIRP.

Installation is a breeze. A clean 12v power supply and antenna hookups are all you need, along with a few screws. It comes with a bracket.

The speaker is good and loud.

My questions to the seller were answered VERY promptly.

This radio is a win over more expensive, less powerful competitors.

This radio transceiver comes pre-programmed with GMRS frequencies. The radio has memory to store V/UHF frequencies to use the radio as a scanning receiver and it receives the commercial FM frequencies. This transceiver has good sound quality. It is very easy to operate. It has a small display window and the data is easily read. One draw back to the display is red characters are hard to read in well lit environments. The color of display characters should be easily changed to colors that best suit the user and their surroundings. I'd recommend programming software so the user will be able to add their favorite repeater that more than likely will have a CTCSS code that's not stored in the radio. The software will also make entering the scanned channels easier to program.

Its been said before, "with only 8 repeater channels, you cannot enter multiples of the same frequencies that differ only by ctcss or DTS codes. In many cases you have repeaters operating on the frequencies with different codes. With this radio, you must choose only the "most important" repeaters to use. This needs at least 16 spaces that can be used for repeaters." I wanted to use this as a base station, but have more than 10 repeaters in easy range of my base antenna setting up at 25'. Finding the 8 repeater channels limit to be hard coded really is a disappointment. This is a VERY nice little radio!
UPDATE: Well, I'm going to eat my pride and reorder this radio. I still feel, quite strongly, it should have at least 16 "spaces" to permit programming multiple PL Tones on the same repeater frequency which is the "real world" in my area - but darn it - I miss this little radio and want it back. Order is in - - again.

I have been using a Kenwood for a couple of years in my HAM shack and decided I wanted some newer technology with more features and easy repeater programming/operations with a display that was readable in subdued lighting rather than the old school LCD. This is all that and much more. It has a built-in scanner that no other GMRS radio offers. It is pre-programmed for the 30 GMRS channels (note RCV only certain channels) so it took all of five minutes to connect an antenna and then power and VOILA up and running with a SWR of 1:1.3. I may buy another for my vehicle. 73s

After a person stop's transmitting there is a large amount of noise that stays on the channel until you move up and back to the channel. I've checked and even increased my squelch, shielded the power leads (and am using a good power supply) and have a well tuned jpole antenna (swr 1.02) but this is a constant annoyance and for the price, I'm really nonplussed with the performance. This unit is also less than a week old, will probably return it for a refund as I don't think a replacement will have any better quality control.

I am using the GMRS-50X1 50 Watt radio as a base station. As part of HAM radio emergency response in our area, northern Utah, I needed to be able to communicate with non-HAM citizens. Most of those who would be affected already have the FRS/GMRS handheld radios that were so popular 10 years ago. So, I bought my GMRS license and set up the radio as part of my HAM shack. The only drawback with this radio is the TOO SMALL display!

I researched a few GMRS radios and first purchased a BTECH handheld. After determining that I needed more power to transmit a further distance, I bought this radio. After a quick setup, I was up and running in under 20 minutes. My first broadcast I received a reply for 44 miles away! This radio is so feature rich and powerful, I would recommend this radio for anyone wanting a 50 watt radio that is able to access repeaters. I also like the fact that I can monitor 4 channels at one time and the mic gain is a great feature as well. A lot of high end features for the $$.
