Dust and moisture resistant for robust reliability1The dust and moisture resistance design makes this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures1. 1- Not guaranteed to be 100% dust and moisture resistant |
XD Linear Motor for fast, precise, quiet AFSony’s advanced XD (extreme Dynamic) linear motor technology - the same type used in G Master series lenses - focuses on and tracks even fast-moving subjects with outstanding speed and precision. Coupled with the advanced real-time AF capability of the latest compact APS-C bodies, you have a high-performance, easy-handling system for landscapes, wildlife, and more. |
7-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokehThe 7-blade circular aperture maximizes the beauty of this large-aperture prime-lens, contributing to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused foreground and background, as well as perfectly round points of defocused light. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides that create unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light. Alpha lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result. |

Focus hold button, programmable for multiple functionsThe focus hold button not only performs its primary function to lock focus when recomposing, but can be customized to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, these custom functions include: Eye AF, AF On, Aperture Preview, Shot Result Preview or Bright Monitoring. |
Linear Response MFLinear Response MF realizes precise manual focus control, closely equivalent to mechanical manual focus, which enables linear focus transition to ring rotation angle for repeatable and accurate manual focus that is especially desirable for MF control during video capture. |
Instant auto/manual focus selectionInstantly and quickly switch between auto and manual focus via an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you, or decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you chose. |

70mm F4.5: Sony is a little sharper in the center and corners.
100mm F5.0: same sharpness in the center, Sony is way sharper in the corners.
135mm F5.6: same sharpness in the center, Sony is way sharper in the corners.
200mm F5.6: same sharpness in the center, Sony is way sharper in the corners.
300 vs. 350mm F6.3: Sony is sharper in the center and way sharper in the corners.
Sony 70-350mm has silent OSS and fast and accurate autofocus so it is great for video. Make sure to use a sturdy AV tripod for 200-350mm (300-525mm equivalent) videos because it's hard to completely eliminate the shaking.
Overall, I love this new lens! It's compact, light weight, yet it delivers a fantastic 105-525mm equivalent focal range.

Things I like:
Very light for the focal length
Compact size fits well with my A6500 and A6000
Very Good sharpness
Seems well made
Autofocus is reasonably fast
Things I don’t like:
The A6500/6000 are not well suited to long lenses. You need a grip to hold any extreme tele reasonably steady.
The controls on the Sony crop bodies lack a front control wheel, which makes hampers changes during action.
The results are quite sharp, but lack the snap of the 100-400 or 200-600 at 18mp APS-C on the A7RIII.
The autofocus is more than acceptable, but lacks the speed of its bigger siblings which I have rented.
The max opening of F/6.3 is slow for the 350mm length. It is also not dazzling at that FL and aperture. F/8 is the true minimum.
No teleconverter is available. No focus limit switch.
For birding 350mm is a minimum. Cropping exacerbates issues of sharpness and high ISO from the slow aperture.
If I am traveling light, this is a terrific option with the compact bodies. This lens plus the Zeiss 16-70/F4 covers all you are likely to need (maybe adding a little Sigma prime for indoors) and the whole thing fits in a small bag or waist pack. The question is whether one travels light often enough to need this compact kit. In a perfect world for me, Sony would make a compact 300mm/F4 prime and converter like Pentax and Nikon, and their crop bodies would have front control wheels and no AA filters. Life isn’t perfect.

While the F6.3 aperture at 350mm could be a tradeoff as I've noticed having to bump up the iso quite a bit now (but not too bad because of the optical stabilization). I set and forget the shutter speed to 1/500 when I'm out birding and get quite a few decent shots if it's not too dark out. The sharpness is comparable to my old prime lens and the versatility of the zoom is appreciated although I am using the 350mm about 90% of the time.
I am definitely enjoying the much lighter setup of the sony aps-c kit; I can carry this lens mounted on the camera + two small-medium lenses in a 3L camera bag with me and not be 'aching' after a day out hiking.

For its focal length and (average) speed it's a very reasonable size and length.
And the revered Sony autofocus works well across the entire frame, which wasn't the case for the Tamron lens I had previously.
I've included some example shots, all of which were hand held at long focal lengths and in lowish light.
