No repeater, just simplex.
First, I would like to mention where I tested them... Blue Cypress Lake in Florida. The lake itself is 7 miles across, but has canals that extend the waterway for many more miles. These canals are surrounded with thick trees and vegetation.
Next, the equipment... Both antennas were mounted to the stern of aluminum Jon boats. (Both antennas were about 18" from the water surface) Both boats had a Midland MTX500 radio installed, and both were using the medium power level setting. (Two identical setups)
The test... One boat remained anchored near the shore, the other traveled away from the stationary boat. Radio checks were performed every couple of minutes. At the 7 mile distance (far side of the lake) our radio communications were crystal clear without any static or distortion. There was absolutely no difference in the quality of audio across the entire lake. At the 10 mile mark (7 miles across the lake and 3 miles into a canal) communications had noticeable static and audio issues. At this point we both switched the radios to high power (50 watts). Communications improved greatly and only a slight static could be heard in the audio.
10 Miles of clear communications with stubby antennas that were basically mounted at knee level, that's quite impressive!
You will need a mount for it. The NMO mount isn't included because everyone's needs are different. I chose one of the mounts that attaches to the edge of my vehicle's hood.
A 3db antenna is a good balance between range and angle of propagation. For example, a 9db antenna would be a very narrow beam, which isn't as useful in hilly terrain. 3DB may not be as much flat propagation, but it covers a broader range of egress and ingress angles, so is suitable for offroading and hilly terrain.
