Solid cheap radio
4 Stars
Solid cheap radio
Firstly this is a GMRS radio and requires a FCC license. With little known about this radio and the attractive price point I decided to give it a go. In my experience I tried my best to go through the radio thoroughly. The radio is GMRS FCC type certified and is advertised at 5w. As posted from the FCC it tested out at 4.47w max. The antenna is removable (small set screw holding it in place) and is a SMA Male connection on the antenna. Radio feels good in the hand and feels well constructed especially for the price point. The RT76P is capable of monitoring frequencies outside of the GMRS band and they're monitor only keeping it inside the rules for a GMRS radio. The radio operates great and the menu is similar to a Baofeng/BTech. Once set up the radio operates well and I was able to get over 2.5 miles in some hilly wooded terrain while the handheld was inside a home and talked to my truck on a Midland MXT115. I'm sure the radio would reach out further with better conditions and landscape. The radio I received had an old firmware version which made changing CTCSS and DCS codes and other features only editable via the software. There is a firmware update that remedies this. Retevis offered some good customer service through email and was able to address my needs. In the end I returned this radio in favor of the BTech GMRS-V1. The performance of the two radio is equal just the GMRS-V1 has the ability to store monitor only frequencies. I think it's possible I acted to fast and I may buy this radio again as it was really cheap, performed well and has a fair amount of features and I really liked the build.

The build quality is nice feels very sturdy and it’s gmrs with receive only on noaa broadcasr fm and vhf/uhf so it’s really useful. stock antenna is garbage. i stuck a signal stuff signal stick on it and it dramatically improved reception. also it’s chirp compatible so if you are running linux or mac you will have no problems

I've been using this radio since I purchased it in July 2021. This review is based on what I've experienced since then.

Size/form factor/ergonomics:

The radio is a bit large in comparison to other GMRS alternatives. It is made from very sturdy ABS with a textured finish that is easy to hold, although bulky for smaller hands. The LCD display uses fonts that aren't large and bold enough to easily read, for older eyes. The backlight works well, but stays on in channel scan mode, which adds to battery drain. It would be nice if this were controlled by a setting. The press-to-talk key could use a stronger spring, making it less likely to transmit by mistake, especially if you are left-handed. The knobs controlling volume and channel change are perfect. In daily use, most people won't need to fiddle with the settings, so the display issues are not a major shortcoming. After all the RT76 (non-P) version has no display or keypyad, and it would be fine for uses where frequent channel or settings changes aren't needed.

Battery:

The 1400 mAH battery capacity is too low for a 5 Watt radio, especially considering the physical size of the battery housing. It feels very lightweight, so more battery "guts" should be able to fit in the form factor. There is no larger-capacity battery available, and the only option to buy a spare battery seems to be direct from Retevis, with a high shipping cost. The charger is a "dumb" trickle-charger at 1A, so it's slow, making the small battery even more annoying.l

Performance:

Transmit and receive range and clarity are excellent. The included antenna works well. I bought a longer, higher-gain Smiley antenna, which improves reception even more. The radio ships with the antenna fixed in place by a very small (1.5mm) hex-head set screw, which most people won't have on hand to loosen.

Ease of use and settings:

Others have mentioned the initial problems with firmware errors and software that doesn't work properly. These have been addressed by Retevis; contact Angela Lee at Retevis to get updates. You really do need to read the manual, which has numerous translation errors, to use all the settings. Others have complained about the radio being pre-programmed with CTSS or DCS codes on every channel. Note that Baofeng did this too, with their new GMRS radio, and they agreed it was a bad idea. So, you'll need to manually remove these, either via keypad or software.

I haven't found a way to set up a channel scan group, which would be handy to have for scanning just the repeater channels.

In conclusion, the radio is a good value for the price, but it could be improved by some firmware and software updates, better-written instructions, and a higher-capacity battery with a better charger. A USB-C connector directly on the battery for charging would be even better.

This GMRS radio feels very high quality and durable when you handle it. Much better than my other inexpensive HT’s. Programming and firmware did need to be updated but was easy to do and their customer service is amazing for a radio in this price range. They got right back to me and provided me with the updates and offered any other help I would need. I am impressed.

I cannot find anything to complain about on this radio yet. Battery life is good, the functions are usable and I replaced the antenna with a Nagoya 771. Works great. I guess the only gripe I have is not being able to adjust privacy tones or most settings on a repeater channel from the radio itself. I just get cancel when I try. I can only do it from the programming software.

This is the second Retevis radio I have tried, researching radios to recommend to my GMRS users, with the same infuriating issues (first was RB17P)... It comes programmed from the factory with all channels set to "Narrow" when GMRS is wide band. Also, it has random CTS tones set on every single channel... So out of the box you have to go through each channel, set to wideband, and reset the tones. Also, even when I programmed channel names using the software and set the display to "Name", it still only displays the frequency.. Also, the bandwidth options are "Narrow" and "Width"?? I assume by "Width" they mean "Wide". But even when I try and change it to "Width" in the radio menu, the setting goes back to "Narrow".. I have given up on Retevis, they just do not understand how GMRS in the USA operates.

I think this would make a great radio for the price except for one drawback. The radio is programmed with channel codes out of the box. Therefore, novice users will be unable to use the radio to communicate with other brands unless they reprogram with the use of a computer and patch cord. It took quite a long time to figure out the problem, which seems to be an unnecessary issue. Had to cover quite a few videos before one of them explained the exact issue, and how they have been trying to get the manufacturer to change this. As of this date I believe the issue still exists.
