What is Open & Smooth Sound?
The Open & Smooth sound concept of our industry-leading speakers delivers both sonic excellence and performance. The open-staging and smooth transition of driver response makes for an immersive experience that is truly the ultimate in-car sound.
- Open: Open staging and sound characteristics enhance the widening effect that extends way beyond the space between speakers.
- Smooth: With smooth transitions between mid-bass and tweeter, sound from these speakers is not marred by crossover frequency dips.
Twaron Aramid Fiber Cone and
The new cone and surround on the Pioneer TS-D are constructed from Twaron woven cloth that is hardened and shaped to produce a rigid, yet low mass cone with excellent dampening characteristics. Twaron is a synthetic aramid fiber which is very strong, heat resistant, and rigid when woven into a cloth material. Strength and rigidity are important to maintain cone shape at higher powers. Damping is critical to improving the responsiveness and accuracy. Maintaining low mass improves sensitivity or efficiency.
Tweeter: Small size, Big Sound
The new 0.9 inch tweeters on the TS-D components maintain an exceptionally open and smooth sound quality with silky reproduction of higher frequencies. The design of the TS-D tweeters include a soft dome diaphragm and surround constructed out of lightweight woven fibers, for increased sensitivity and improved response. In addition, the tweeter is designed with a larger rear chamber and rounded over flange, for extended frequency range and wider dispersion.
Installation Friendly Crossove
The crossover network on the TS-D components has been redesigned to significantly reduce the chassis size while maintaining the use of high quality capacitors, inductors and resistors. The compact size improves installation flexibility, allowing the crossover to easily fit inconspicuously inside a door, under the dash or behind a panel. A selectable tweeter level switch (-3dB, 0dB, +3dB) also allows the output of the tweeter and woofer to be closely matched.

I had serious concerns when I first saw the relatively small 3 component crossovers, but I was pleasantly surprised. The speakers are extremely detailed to my ears, easily revealing bits missed by other speakers. The sound is extremely immersive, completely enveloping you in a field of sound. Nuances like fret noise, bass slap or snare and kickdrum attack are extremely lifelike and transparent. Vocals are soaring. These speakers keep up with transients and complicated subject matter when other speakers get confused and muddied. I find new details even in MP3s I previously thought were too compressed and garbled to reveal anything interesting. The speakers play fairly low, and have a considerable amount of authority and punch in the midbass area, despite the smallish magnets. The speakers also handle power fairly well, despite their low power rating. They have no issues taking 100w rms per side from an older PPI amp, however I am not cranking the gains to the point of distortion, so take it with a grain of salt.
The speakers are not without their tradeoffs, however. These are not terribly sensitive, and play a couple db lower than my last couple comp sets. The power handling could stand to be increased. The included wiring is extremely small gauge, and there are no screw terminals on the crossovers (think crimp connects). And if I'm really stretching to find an achilles heal, my ears detect just a touch of break up on cymbal crashes. This persists even at lower volume levels so I dont believe its breaking up at certain frequencies due to distortion. That said, its quite likely that this same breakup existed on my previous speakers, however it didn't stand out as much as it does with the relative clarity on all over frequencies of the Pioneers. I've not tried moving the tweeter to the +3 or -3 settings yet. These concerns are really nit-picking, and pale in comparison to the overall value you get with these comps. Its incredible how vivid, realistic, immersive and detailed these speakers are at this price. I'm highly impressed.
My setup includes a 4x100 PPI amp, Sealed 12" SQ sub 2 ohm DVC, kenwood excelon USB/MP3 head unit. Front comps HPF at 60 Hz, and sub LPF at 60 Hz.
The tweeter response is fantastic, cymbals and high frequencies are really crisp and clear. I haven't played with the crossover yet (left it at 0), but I like the option of being able to increase or decrease the tweeter response. I mounted the crossover inside the door panel with hot glue, so it is easily accessible by removing the window control panel from the door panel, so changing the crossover is a two minute job. I did have to modify my factory tweeter mounts to mount these in the same place. Basically I used a hole saw to change the factory tweeter grill into a mounting ring, then hot glued the tweeters into these, and then hot glued the whole assembly into the door panel. If you aren't savvy with tools, you'll have a hard time mounting these tweeters into your stock location (at least if its like my truck...)
The woofers sound great but they are very lacking on the low end. If you are looking for a lot of bass, you won't get it out of these speakers. I plan to mount some TSD6802R's in the rear which are reviewed to have great low end. Hopefully this keeps me from having to put in a sub, as I like the little amount of space I have in my extended cab truck.
Overall this pair sounds excellent and is a huge upgrade from stock. If you are pairing with a sub or other pair of speakers with good low end, you'll be very happy. If you need this pair to pump out some bass, you should look at something else.
As for the sound.... I am thoroughly impressed with this set, with untreated doors the midbass is fantastic, plenty of definition and impact, the tweeters are clear may say kinda airy. I played with tweeter placement but chose the factory locations because they can get bright, but being more off-axis in the factory tweeter pods tamed them down quite a bit. I'm guessing some work went into these crossovers, the imaging is pretty good considering I'm use to my cars (the Honda isn't mine), they both have a DSP running full active, but this set has definitely impressed me, especially for such a small hit in the wallet. For the record, I ran this set first off the head unit just as a reference, then ran it through an Alpine MRV-f300. Obviously ran off of the Alpine Amplifier it made a world of difference. If your going to amp this set and are on a budget, I promise you won't be disappointed.
