The manual for my John Deere D140 says that damage could occur to the hydrostatic transmission if the engine is started with the transmission bypass rod in the "bypassed" ("tow") position...

I'm curious... why would that result in damage?

On my husky, it wants me to start the engine with the bypass rod out and press the pedal back and forth to purge the transmission of air. Im wondering if its more if someone had the gas pressed then pushed in the rod
