Alright so I recently took on a somewhat bigger project than I expected. Went to get a front end alignment done on my 98' tacoma I just bought and as I suspected, there was some parts that needed changing, although I didn't expect the list to be as long as it was. Both inner and outer tie rods on each side, both upper ball joints, one lower ball joint, and both wheel bearings. There was no way I was paying someone else to do all of that since I was going to be home for a little while and I had dabbled in some of these repairs on my earlier toyotas. So I took the list and sourced everything I needed, or so I thought. Turns out the wheel bearings were pressed in this model's steering knuckles. So I had to remove both of them and find somewhere to press the hubs and old bearings out and reassemble them for me. Removed both of the steering knuckles only to discover that the passenger side one was cracked all the way thru the ball joint fit. After carrying all the new parts to the machine shop, I got it all back and reassembled just to find out the rotor on the driver's side is now cutting into the brake caliper. It feels like the hub isn't in the bearing far enough and the bearing seems to have too much movement. Everything was new on that side except the steering knuckle itself. How much movement is normal? Shouldn't the bearing be incredibly tight in the steering knuckle fit? It's just been one thing after another with this and even though I've been very thorough I can't attest for the work i contracted out. Kind of pissed I didn't just find a press to use myself so I knew it was done right the first time.

I took the hub nut off the inside and cleaned it up the best i could. I believe it was just loose. The more I tighten it up, the better it gets. The bearing feels right now and the hub doesn't move in and out like it did before. If this is alright, how tight do I want to get the nut?

I don't know if it was a recall for 98's but from 2001-2004 I believe there was a lower ball joint recall. You could take it to your Toyota dealer and play dumb and see if they will replace all of the stuff. Check if your vin is under the recall or service bulletin.

My lower ball joint are toast to and it causing terribly uneven tire wear and I'm sure it's affecting the brakes in some way.
