Towing witih a canopy

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether towing a travel trailer is easier if you have a canopy/topper on you tac? To me it would seem it should as there will be less face of the trailer pushing into the wind due to the raised height at the rear of the truck.

 

I can't tell you first hand. From talking to other campers, it seems like having the truck bed covered is what makes the difference. Some have a cap and some have tonneau covers. I carry alot of stuff in the p/u bed, so I have neither. I also don't tow cross-country like the retired folks.

 

I have a 6' high enclosed V-nose trailer. No cap on truck.

I was wondering if a cap would help fuel mileage when towing?

I don't like the look of the raised caps, but if they are better than the roof high caps, I'd consider it.

 

If you don't like raised caps, add a wind defector to the rear of the cap to help the air over the front of the trailer. The trailer will then be in the trucks draft, so fuel useage should be reduced. I have towed an Airstream over 60,000 miles over the last 40 years, and can tell you that the shape of the front really makes a difference in handling and fuel consumption. No, the Tacoma doesn't do tow duty, that's reserved for the Dodge 2500 CTD for now because of it loaded weight of 6340 pounds.

 

If I can get a few extra MPG, I'd be willing to shell out for a cap. Filling up every 190-220miles is a pain when travelling 2000miles round trip.
