02 Tacoma, fixed with curse words.

    The new camry's still faster 0-60 by.4...

Moral of the story, don't buy a toyota if you want something fast.

I test drove an FRS on an oil change once when I first got my truck. It wasn't the fastest car but it was fun to drive. I think with boost it would be an interesting setup.

Didn't see much of the hype with the FRS, it's not even "fast" plus everyone and their mother get one on this site. If they were to come with a TT 2jz then sure.

I like the newer IS fsports for what they are.

For under $20K when you snatch them up at the end of the year what are you expecting? I bet with some time and patience I could build up a FRS for way less than a Mustang GT, Camaro SS, or Challanger SRT for pennies on the dollar and still be able to steer.

Yeah, in a few years when I get my finances in perfect shape I'm going to pull the trigger on either a used S2000 or FRS. Then mod the piss out of it.

What is the definition of "sports" car? Some say a pathetic FR-S an S2000 and an STi are sports cars.

Well I think a Supra is a sports car : High HP motor, front engine rwd layout, 2 door, real manual trans, mammoth proportional brakes, excellent handling, LSD, 180 mph top speed, and a spoiler that actually creates down-force, etc.... It sounds like those boys in Japan made a full fledged sports car.

Maybe somebody has a different opinion, ok that's fine.

But my point is that Toyota hasn't made anything close since 98. Celica GT-S, Corolla XR-S, MR-S, a V6 Camry that Jan drifted in the desert, an FR-S, IS-F, IS350 aren't sports cars.

For the price of course people: loyals to the brand, those that want reliability, people with a change of mind, college students, college students' dads, and mr. Mid-life crisis are going to chalk up on these.

I wouldn't even bother looking at American power, but with with Toyota c a n do and has the potential to-do they give us what? An FRS.

It's not until they hear the cries of people that they introduce the ft-1, and that's still a concept.

A little strong there buddy. Give me 10-15K and I'll stomp a Supra on a road course with the FR-S. That's my goal, to have a car that not only has a little speed but one that I can push like a Porsche in the corners. The fact that the FR-S has such a low center of gravity gives me an excellent starting point for a project. A car that will truly be mine. Something that only I'll know the capability of until someone gets inside.

A Supra is honestly someone elses project. Cool car yes, end all be all no. It's old tech and I don't want anything to do with one for the same reason I'm not looking for an RX-7. The S2000 is as old and different as I'd be willing to go, and that car I want because of it's uniqueness.

What makes me sad is how a company like Ford is adding more high performance models while Toyota just sticks it's head in the sand. Ford has something for everyone coming. A new FT car that should have some retardedly good numbers, a new WRX challenging AWD Focus RS, a new Raptor with +100 HP over anything else it competes with, a 1000 HP Shelby mustang, and the venerable SHO. Clearly someone see's the value of eye and track candy and someone doesn't.

Back to the OP though, it makes plenty of sense to call the Tacoma the sports car for Toyota. It's like that cheap V6 Mustang that lures young buyers into the showroom and into the brand.

I have to jump in here a little late and note that I also traded in my 2006 Mustang for the Tacoma. I have a couple of motorcycles and I just didn't drive the Mustang much during the short summers up here. The Mustangs, Camaros, etc., are great to look at and listen to, but I am very glad I got the truck.

I agree; this is the best thing that has shown up in this thread in a while. How about some news, Toyota?

Well... there is no REplacement for DISplacement, that's for sure.

With that being said, Godzilla has a twin turbo 3.8 liter V6 that will destroy a whole lot of V8's, V10's, and V12's.

All the horsepower in the world is for naught if the car doesn't handle well enough to manage it.

I'm a driver. I love to drive. I've driven something as small as a Geo Metro and as large as a Motor Coach Industries bus... I've driven trucks, coupes, sedans, vans, and sports cars.

Drivers love to drive. They don't argue about WHAT to drive.

    Just my dos centavos.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
What I gathered from that article was that Akio Toyoda was comparing the age group in which Tacoma owners and sports cars owners coexist in, not that the Tacoma is a sports car. Tacomas and sports cars typically appeal more to, and have a broader range of young adults driving them.

I guess you could say that the X-Runner (formerly S-Runner) was the closest thing to a sports car Tacoma as it gets if you wanted.

If you are referring to the Supra, that was around till late 2002. Sure it wasn't offered stateside after '98, but still did exist after that overall.

I think that's rather fascinating. My dream car is still a Lexus IS300.
