I got a TRD skid plate and i was trying to install it over the original like you're suppossed to, but I found that the original screws weren't quite long enough to catch the threads. Is it necessary to keep the original skid plate on? Or can I remove it and just put on the trd one? Or do I need to get longer screws? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Who said you were supposed to install the TRD one OVER the old one?

The TRD skid is designed to go on over existing skid. I guess you don't have to though.

Okay, another reason I ask is because the original must've hit something from the previous owner and i think it's not helping me put the trd over the original. Any other input? Anyone know if it's alright to remove the original and just put the trd on?

If you want both skids on at the same time, which seems lame to me, I guess you need to try longer bolts. That black factory "skid" isn't too strong though so don't count on it to save you in a pinch.

Same here. I was under the impression that people bought the TRD skid because it looks pretty.

:I recently installed a TRD a couple months back but I believe it would work. If not you could always get a washer or two to make up for any play you may have in the bolts. You also reuse the original skid bolts as well so as long as you have those you should be good. My truck is not outside or I would go look for you. Frame replacement wait:annoyed:

The same could be said for many aftermarket items. Hell half the people that put trail gear on their rigs never go off road. Money to burn and they want to look the part. Buy a huge 4 wheel drive to go grocery shopping. The list is long but distinguished.

Okay I still haven't seen a real clear cut answer. Can I just remove the factory and replace with the TRD?

It turned into a bit of a circle-jerk in here....

You're supposed to install the optional, TRD skid over the original black "skid". That said, I'm pretty sure I've read of people that have taken the black "skid" off and the truck didn't explode.

Are you sure the bolts aren't reaching? Because I can attest that they're a pain in the ass to get in. It took me about 15 minutes of pushing, moving and jamming those front bolts in before I found the thread. I imagine lifting the truck would have made it 1000x easier.

Yeah man I'm having the same trouble you had. These bolts aren't anywhere close to touching the threads. I think I'm just going to take off the orignal. If anyone thinks it's a bad idea please tell me haha

I bought the TRD because my factory skid was rusted to hell. I may do the same thing you are doing when I get my truck back. Don't want to see rust anywhere.

It isn't a bad idea, just shouldn't be necessary. It really is designed to fit over the black one with the supplied hardware.

You can almost certainly find the bolts in a longer length most anywhere. Home Depot. Local parts place. You can probably even find 'em in stainless if you want...
