As a former CR subscriber, I do regret to say some of their recommendations/reviews are not as reliable as they used to be.
I've had a few 'recommended' or 'best buy' picks of various items I was less than pleased with.

I bought a 2005 in 2011. It was a one owner truck but still had some issues from the factory. I.e., rear leaf (tsb), exhaust (tsb), and the worst of all-a perpetual leak near the antenna (which I have tried to fix... any advice?). Anyway, all of these likely would have been alleviated by getting an 08+, but then I would have had to pay more. I'm happy with my 05.

My theory on new models is everyday I make my coffee with precisely this much cream at this time and this much sugar at this time, I do this for 10 years, by that point I should be able to make flawless coffee every time, tastes the same, looks the same, etc, I've worked out over the years any issues, etc with making my cup of coffee. One day my wife decides to buy a different set of creamer, and I have a different mug, of course there will be some growing pains, some errors making my perfect cup every time as designed but 10 years from now I should have flawless execution as well. This goes for anything manmade or assembled, its new a new assembly, etc on a mass scale with limited testing cause they can't test a prototype for 10 years thats just silly. There will be quirks and small things, its inevitable, if you don't care about those little things or trade in vehicles every few years then no worries, if you do then maybe a 15 and then 3 years later a 18, etc. Either way its still a safer bet than some other manufacturers, Toyota depends on its name which is built on reliability and what was though some may argue isn't anymore a quality product.

Why do that when a Colorado or Nissan will do just fine in a small truck?

Return with us now to 2004 when we were eagerly anticipating a new complete make over of the previous Tacoma. Was it a disaster from day one with teething problems ? Hardly. It hit the ground running and continued for the next 10 years with features loyal truck owners wanted along with it's reliability. This one will too.

I would not be afraid to buy a 2016 model, currently have an 01 double cab( first year model), bought a new 07 fj( new model) never missed a beat with either of them.

So what your saying is we shouldn't base our purchase on a bunch of self proclaimed "experts" on an Internet forum, but rather a website with no automotive background?

I know this is the third gen section, but how about you just buy what you want.

Back in the day, VVT and all aluminum motors with dual OHC were pretty novel in off road vehicles. The "old" 4.0 has features that GMC is just getting around to using. I bet the 3.5 has similarities to what they make now and a six speed auto is very conservative considering the darn Tundra has had one for a while now. You think the rear brakes are new drum design. The only really innovative features other then the valve train and head are the electronic add on features that Are proven in other models. And gee, wasn't the original dual VVT system pretty novel for Toyota years ago ?
