I'm wanting to get a new toy in a few months and need some help because I have NO experience with RC cars. So far I've decided that I want a RC car that can go off road and want to keep my budget around $300 or less?

    THE QUESTION ! ! !

I'm not sure which brands are reputable, but more importantly is it better to get a Gas (Nitro) Car or a Electric Car? I don't want to do a Gas car if they fly through gas and I'm constantly buying more, but I don't want to get a electric car if the charge dies quickly...

Also in the price range I'm looking at can the cars be customized with different parts or on the cheaper models can not much be done to them?

I had a TMax gas truck many years ago, it was a blast. Recently, my 3 year old son got an RC car for xmas, one of those $15 fry's deals. I discovered that he liked chasing it more than driving it...and I had a blast driving it! I decided to get another car.

I bought a cheap redcat racing buggy for less than $200 . So far it has been great. It's cheap, and parts are replaceable. and a lipo really brings it to life! Put my phone in the body and the gps clocked it at 32mph

With that, and a good charger & lipo you'll be around 300

oh and I went with electric, for two reasons. 1) won't piss my neighbors off with the noise and 2) dont have to mess with tuning

For the two reasons you mentioned I'm pretty sure I'll go electric. I currently live in a apartment (until my lease is up) and I wouldn't know how to tune anything. haha

Stick with a known brand such as Traxxas Losi or axial make sure you can get replacement parts locally or the parts are available online I wouldn't go gas it's expensive pain to tune and can be messy stay with a electric ready to run model and buy quality batteries there are lots to choose from I suggest checking out amain hobbies or tower hobbies for good deals and coupons also read some reviews first and watch some YouTube unboxing and test videos by Rc Sparks and leprechaun 79 there a lot of good info there
Hope this helps joins few forums for your specific model after you purchase such as Rc universe Traxxas etc
Pm me if you need a little advice I may be able to point you in the right direction

Traxxas is a great place to start. The Slash is a great truck to Start with. If you want something a little taller and pretty much bomb proof the old 2WD Stampede is a blast.

that's my only complaint about this off brand redcat buggy...I can't buy all of its replacement parts at my local hobby store. So if I break something I have to wait for shipping.
