I have an 03 Tacoma Regular Cab with the 2.4l I-4 (2RZ-FE), auto, 3500 lbs towing capacity. I'm in North Carolina, own a car in California (where I'm originally from). And I'm thinking about bringing it out here to NC. I'm driving back to CA in May and I'm thinking about the possibility of bringing it back, ideally with the Tacoma. I don't have too much experience towing, especially these distances.

The car is about 2800 lbs, so I would have to find a lightweight car hauler (not a dolly-type either).

Any recommendations? Has anyone done anything similar? I realize that this has the potential to go pretty bad, so I 'm trying to plan. Thanks.

Do not tow with your truck. You'll be a hazard on the road. Hire a company to tow it for you.

IF the S2000 is in condition for a trouble free cross country drive.......

Fly me from Tampa to Cali, then from NC to Tampa, and I'll drive your S2000 cross country for you.

Gas and a modest daily per-diem is on you, calculated by the shortest distance.

Gas, lodging and food above that shortest distance is on me. In case a side trip or sightseeing stopover is in order. However, I am willing to limit the number of extra days and miles accumulated to something mutually agreeable.

Although I've done a lot of autoxing and some canyon carving, I commit to treat it like grandma's car. You can even 'black box it' if you wish, and pull that rev limiter back 1k or so. :D

OK OK, you're not gonna put your baby in the hands of a stranger. But I thought I'd still toss out the notion. :p

Fly to Cali and drive the car back. The time you save by flying can be used on the drive back.

Yeah, I didn't have too much confidence in being able to pull this off, thanks for the advice.

Pretty tempting Bill. Quite nice of you to offer. :p

I've actually had other car nuts solicit me to do long relocations when buying or selling something a good distance away. Of course they were folks that knew me pretty well, knew how I maintained my own rides, and knew I had mechanical empathy.

My most fun 'relocation' venture was shoeing a fully restored '71 240Z 4 spd in 907 Racing Green that a friend sold............ Delivery was just a few hours away, but really got an unbelievable amount of attention out on the road.
