Common', guys... you've turned this into a diesel pissing match.

Let's get bring this back on track.

OK.... How big is the proposed camper trailer and how much does it weigh?

PS: OP, I dare you to post the specs. With the expert advice received here, you could write the new book 'Towing for Dummies'.

This is the important thing. Like I said, OP can probably buy a half ton and be much better off than a Diesel ride and drivability wise.

Enough to make it a lot of fun!
In my opinion the Duramax is the way to go. My dad has an 01 (before the Allison transmission) and it runs great with no problem and tows like a dream. Yes the cummins motor is great but everything around it is total crap and you will most likely have a lot of problems. I have driven a brand new power stroke and they are nice but in my experience they are always sluggish off the line and they are fords. :D I have also driven the new duramax and they are amazing. they ride great and run like a dream.

Op, I saw your post on trailers you were considering and a diesel would be overkill, so unless you've decided on a trailer twice the size of those I'd go gas engine, but you'd be happier with a full size truck. I had a trailer about the size of those and pulled it with both of my trucks. The Tacoma could do it but was getting 9 mpg and beating itself keeping up with traffic. With the 2007 Chevy duramax which has 650 ft. lbs. of torque it was like it wasn't even there. The new diesels have around 800 ft. lbs. of torque. For those who've only gone on a test drive with a diesel my duramax feels sluggish when the engines cold but not when it's warmed up.

    Yup, the thread has strayed.

    How's this for a compromise...

Look at all the kinds of TT that a Taco like yours can tow on the thread I mention above. No need to get rid of your truck.
