Self-propelled Push Mowers

I'm the market for a new push mower, preferably self propelled. Gave up looking on craigslist, just gonna buy new - I don't want someone else's problem. Looking to spend 250 ish. I don't need a the bagging or mulching options, just reliability For starting and cutting about an acre of grass. Let's hear what you got and your opinions. I have lowes, home depot, and a few other shops nearby. Thanks in advance.

self propelled blows ass. it's too heavy, granted this was when I started mowing around 9 years old, by 11 i convinced pops to buy a lighter manual mower.. satisfied ever since.

 

The self propelled are alot heavier than the push mowers but for a large peice of grass its great to have. For a small peice just buy a lightweight push mower its also easier to move it around corners than a self propelled. Honda are great but expensive. Craftsman are ok and are relatively cheap.

 

For an actual acre of cutting, I'd look at something more than a $250.00 mower - self propelled or not.

Use to be into lawn care in my younger years . The Ariens mower is about the best you can get in a self powered unit . They are a very solid built mower but as mentioned above , it will cost you more money ... better than Troybuilt and any big box store brands . If you are cutting an Acre of grass every 7 days , consider how long you plan to live there . An Acre will take you 3-4 hours with a well built self propelled mower with a 21 inch cut . I wouldnt be pushing a mower for 4 hours unless you are a fitness nut .
These will last you 20 years if you keep up with oil changes and blade sharpening .

Honda motor. I'm Amazed at how easy mine starts every time I start it. Often when I pull it I think "what silly ligth pull was that - it will never start like that" and then "vrooom" it fires right up !

Also, some drives the front wheels and some the rear. I prefer the rear, because you can tilt it back to make a turn and still use the drive function.

• Deck is continuously round with no nooks to trap grass, requires very little cleaning
• Honda aluminum-block SOHC engine

Only annoying thing is you need to fill out a form online for them to send you the side-discharge chute.

 

Thanks for all the info fellas. I ended up going to Home Depot and getting the Honda GCV160 21" 3 in 1. Description at link below. It gets great reviews, and my Dad's honda mower is still running strong 15 yrs later. Hopefully they still make em like they used to! Gonna fire it up tomorrow after work.

I'm pretty sure that's what my pops got last year. We had a Deere self propelled that my parents got when we moved and lasted till I graduated high school (17 years) then they got a craftsman that had a ton of problems and kept having to get fixed so after 5 years it was gone. He borrowed my brothers walk behind for a season and then bought that Honda. RWD is definitely the way to go. Fwd sucks.

 

Yep I've cut with it 4 times and it's awesome. Starts up everytime. Powers thru the thick tall stuff. It'll only know ethanol-free gas for life, and fuel will be burnt out of the carb everytime. I still miss sitting on a riding mower and drinking beer for 2hrs, but I guess now I'm getting beer free excercise.....

 

Bought a used Honda push mower for $100 off Craigslist. It was already 5 years old when I got it and it lasted another 7 after that until I hit a huge rock and bent the crank. That engine was as reliable as they come, even using E10 gas its whole life (no choice here in VA). Happy cutting!!
